Say you get an offer letter but the salary doesn't meet expectations...I asked the director if we could talk about the letter before another one is produced since some dates were off...I have to call him this morning.

Is there any room for movement on the salary?
Any way you could up the salary 5-7%?
I had hoped the salary would be more of an incentive...

WTF do I say? I've never negotiated salary. Do I barter with healthcare costs, or bring up 401k matching? There are tons of details I don't know, like paid time off per year...maybe this is a way to lead into the conversations. Basically say it's tough to judge the total compensation since I don't know the details, but that if all things are equal it seems a bit low.

shite.

Ask for the salary you want + 10,000 dollars

If you are good at your job and valuable, the rest will take care of itself

Just ask.
Tell them I need it to be X.

Understand where ya coming from. I negotiated and got an increase. It was kind of awkward and you dont want to turn them off because you are starting fresh, but theres no reason why not discuss it.

You will usually get close to what you want

There are website that compare salary by position and city. If you feel you can get more just ask. You gotta be a great candidate to get it though. For my current job I had to put on my application what my desired salary would be so I added 30% and then rounded up. They offered another $10 on top of that. Made me feel desired. If they had low balled me I doubt I would have accepted because that reflects on future salary issues.

Always ask for more than you want. All they can do is say no.

Think of it this way, the person you are asking wants to make more money also, therefore they will completely understand.

also find out when you would possibly get a raise next go around......If they give you what you want upfront you may not see a raise for awhile.

I had written out an entire speech highlighting why I deserved a pay increase and was going to speak my mind at my next review. Out of the blue I was called in and told my pay had increased more than what I was going to ask. That's my only experience

are you dead set on taking the offer?

for my current position, we discussed salary before any offer letter was drawn up

the salary i was offered in the letter was actually a little higher than we discussed

When I went into the interview I told them I expected to make no less than ____. They offered me 4k less than ____ so I called them and told them thanks but I need to make _____ for me to feel comfortable working for them. They gave me what I asked for.

Idk what type job you have but in my situation it's tough to ask for raise.
June will make 2 yrs I've been with same outfit.
I see my boss 1-2 times yr, talk to him maybe once a week.. Sometimes more. They give me a badass exp account and truck totally paid for ...gas/maintenance and ins.
Little in the way of accountability, plus I get commission at end year.
My salary is better than most.
So I'm really not wanting to rock boat.

Problem is my 3-4% increase ive gotten just about covers the increase in health ins cost.... So I'm not really bringing home in any extra monthly income.

My first couple paychecks were substantially more than now bc obv there were no retirement, ins ect withheld.
Eventually I'm gonna need a raise or find something on side to make extra.
I'm not easily satisfied, I could make 10k month ....pretty soon I'm gonna want 12k.

I think I should leave it alone and find an extra source of income.

Take everything into consideration...vacation time...401k match...sick time. Additional benefits like free company life insurance...bonus and of course salary. Typically there is a 20% range for each job band and they don't ever start there. You need to understand your situation and theirs. If they love you and have no other options you can slow play them while waiting on a pending offer from another firm...If you are unemployed I wouldn't play with fire

Companies want you for the least amount and you want to be hired for the most amount of money. Find some middle ground that works for everyone. I have had good luck negotiating additional vacation time and an increase in salary. If they are not willing to give you additional money up front, discuss a raise in 60-90 days.

every employer will say this but it NEVER happens. Get your money upfront. I have negotiated salary several times and I have always asked for Way more then I actually wanted, then they counter with more then I was trying to get.

D,

I think you know who this is,Kris. When you negotiate a salary a couple things are very important. In general 401k matching and healthcare are not flexible because they utilize qualified plans and all employees other than execs get the same. paid leave is very negotiable. you negotiate this by saying you want credit for years worked with your current company. For example if the new company has a policy of giving you 2 weeks for the first 5 years, 3 weeks in years 5-10, and 4 weeks thereafter, if you've been at work for 10+ years, you say you want credit for all that time, not just to start over. additionally, comp time is very negotiable. if you work a weekend, you take Monday off with your kid.

As to salary, it should be negotiated open ended on your part. you should throw out a range. if you really want to make 75k, you say based on my experience level and what I'm seeing in the market, I was expecting something in the range of 77K-95k. The bottom of the range should never be less than what you'd be willing to take, and the range should be broad. Ideally they comeback mid-range. worst case they come back bottom of the range.

Email me if you need more leverage.

I'm getting ready to make my arguement for a promotion in a few weeks. I've been taking on more and more work for two years now and have been working at a level above my current pay grade for almost 2 years.

I have my arguement together showing what I've been working on, I hightlighted everything I do on my current job description as well as the job description that's one level up.

My arguement is very strong to be promoted, but my dilemma is what do I do if I'm not happy with the salary increase that's given? I've been working beyond my current grade for almost two years and haven't been getting what I feel like I deserved during that entire time. Is something like this negotiable? I do have a number in mind that I would be happy with, but what do I say to try to squeeze more out of them if they don't give me what I'm hoping for?
