re: How does Chik Fil A have better more efficient workers?

Chick Fil A is the best ran fast food company in the business. They train their employees to work fast and efficiently, and have integrity built into every thing they do.
They are a model of how to do business.

It starts with leadership

The technicality missing in this thread is the difference between a Burger King / McDonald's "Franchisee" and a Chick-fil-A "Operator."
Franchises are usually owned by an investor. Said investor may own 3 or 7 stores, has an office off-site and is seldom at the restaurant. He is an investor. His investment into equipment / labor is his decision.
An "Operator" has one store (a few older ones have 2 or 3). He has virtually no investment ($5,000). The company actually owns every store, every location, every piece of restaurant equipment. The operator, in many cases, is at the store many hours each day, particularly rush hours. Some have excellent managers ($70k/year), so they've positioned themselves to be away from the store more often.
Corporate and the Operator split the net 50/50. Hence, the operator usually makes $150k - $400k / year / store. Remember, only $5k invested by operator. The relationship may be terminated by Corporate at any time for any reason. This was the original contract written on a napkin by the founder, Truett Cathy, in the 50's? (maybe 60's). It's basis is still in use today.
When the Operator retires, he owns nothing; unlike a franchise, which the owner can then sell.
The work-at-CFA to get a store was the way for a long time. And there certainly is favorability towards family members of successful operators. However, the pool of applicants for stores today is so great, CFA can choose to be very, very picky.
If I recall, CFA is now opening about 120 stores / year. Everything corporate does is cash, no debt. Sales have increased from 2 billion /year several years ago to 4.5 B / year.
Good info, thanks!!

I worked at Chick-fil-A back in the day. They go about looking for employees in a different way. The owner came to an event at my church youth group, and used it as a kind of meet and greet for us high school kids who could use a job. It's not that we were all some goody two shoes Christian kids, but hiring from a pool like that pretty much weeds out all the shitheads and thieves.

Canes and chickfila are by far the best.
Are you serious? They are better now, but used to be the slowest fast food place there was.

1 Corinthians 10:31
"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."
They are blessed...Mr. Cathy made a commitment to run his business in way that would bring glory and honor to God...and God has taken his offerings and multiplied it...period.

they have a rule book (a guide) for running their restaurants. It's called a Restaurant Operations Systems Manual. It's a tried and true system for running a specific restaurant. In this case, a Chick fil A restaurant. It has policies and procedures for doing everything, from hiring and firing, storing food, cooking food, mopping the floor, which cleaning chemicals to use, doing inventory, dealing with emergencies, running the registers, closing duties, to cleaning the parking lot. If it happens in that restaurant, the correct way to do it is written down in that Operations Manual.
Why doesn't every fast food place have this? I'm assuming that they all DO, I don't know how one could possibly just train staff on the fly without a SOP manual in place, but why is CFA's more efficient than others?

It's because of the standards that they set, I would imagine. They have a particular image, and a particular set of people who follow those standards, work for them. That's why...

Notice how during lunchtime it's not just two fresh-out-of-jail hoodrats running the entire restaurant.
Do we want these people to have jobs or not? Or do we just want to bitch about them regardless?

There are some interesting answers in here...but the company's philosophy seems to be what really makes Chik Fil A stand out. They want their employees to keep a clean store, be courteous, kind and helpful when facing customers. It helps that the company offers help to it's employees, too.
Every time I've been in CFA, I've been really happy with my service and the people inside dealing with customers. The cashiers aren't messy-dressed hood rats or trailer trash mouthbreathers, the managers are always around trying to help and it's just a good operation they have going.
Other decent examples of the CFA-employee model are Costco and Target.
Target is a red walmart. Same shitty employees.

Every Chik Ful A I've been to has had great service, including one in Memphis staffed by all blacks. The only time I've had mediocre service was at the College Dr one but eveything on College Dr sucks.
I go to the college drive location often and you're wrong. Lines are always long but always move very fast. They are always quick and polite at the window. They never screw up an order. They are clean...and the food is always fresh and delicious.
