re: How does a cop's radar on a moving motorcycle work?

The radar determines the relative speed between your car and the radar gun using the doppler effect. The radar gun subtracts the speed of the motorcycle to determine your actual speed.

I actually had a physicist that was in the middle of explaining to me exactly how the radar uses the doppler effect to determine speed, but a damn pelican stole his cellphone and ran away.

It's really not as accurate as LE would make you think.

I mean...it's fairly accurate. A sine wave moves through the air at the speed of light. Based on how long it takes for the wave to return to its origin, and what kind of modulation the radar is using, you can detect the velocity of an incoming object fairly accurately.

Beat frequency.
Same principle as how NMR works.

Radio waves don’t move at the speed of light…..

You sure about that, Tdogg?

Funnily enough, radar happens to be my career field.

Maybe he thinks radio waves travel at the speed of sound cause he thinks they come out of radio speakers.

I believe the original units tied into the vehicles speed sensor but the newer ones use GPS.
Either way don't ask questions and pay your tax for going 5 over so the chief can get a humvee for the Swat team.
That or get a jammer and frick those guys.

Would somewhat agree, but if the person taking the measurement is moving and the subject is moving,I don't have your level of confidence.

weird cause you don't know the answer. but i'm sure you'll try to parrot something said in here like you actually know something in real life.

yea, that darn logic and practical application stuff is what got me in here and has 99% of the posters in here guessing at shite like they know something.

Retired police officer here. Though it’s been years, I wrote many radar tickets in my career and won. Without googling, what is the margin of error on stationary and moving radar?
