Are you trying to get him to stop coming up to you at all? Or just wanting to cut his periodic conversations short?

Just don't respond. Don't smile and don't say OK at all. They will eventually feel awkward and go away. Eventually they will know that you don't want to speak.

Ignore him and be short with him.

I used to have this issue when at the CS lab at school. I'd be working, and someone would come sit next to me and talk to me or ask a question about something. If it was decently short, I'd be nice. One dude, though, never got the memo, and eventually, I started giving him nods and shite as answers and acknowledgement. Problem solved.

That way, you look just kind of look like a dick who is also busy or focused instead of looking like a major dick with no justification.

Ok. This is how you make sure no one ever talks to you again. You will make people think you are an a-hole though.

When you see someone thinking about talking to you, first allow your eyes to easily meet theirs. Then give them a look of recognition and contempt. Now, this is important. You must break eye contact before he/she has a chance to say anything. If you do this, people won't even bother trying to talk to you.

Ask yourself, is it worth it?
