How do you secure a firearm on a road trip?

About to drive a few states over and wondering the best way to secure a firearm during the trip. Mainly asking about during the drive and then in the rental property once I arrive.

I'm not going to carry and there's probably no safe that I can tell from the pics of the rental, so I'd leave it in the place as I go out and about during the week.

How would you keep it secure?

Each state could be different. If you have a cc permit then there is likely reciprocity but depends on the state.

Any reciprocating state, just carry as normal. If you go through one that is not, I would keep the gun unloaded in the trunk, and the magazine inside the car glove box. And if you get stopped, immediately explain what you are doing to the cop.

If you’re planning to drive through New Jersey then don’t even bring it

Why take it if you arent going to carry it (on your person)?

Do you think a criminal will stand around tapping their toe while you go get your firearm from a locked box somewhere?

I really dont understand.

Locked and loaded when I'm running through unfamiliar territory. Keep a picture of my tax stamps just to be safe.

Put it on the dash for other drivers to see. Try to make a lot of eye contact when passing too

I can honestly never once, during countless vacations I've taken, think of a time where I thought to my self "Damn, I really need a gun, right now"

Where the frick are you going?

If I'm crossing state lines, I bring two bags. One will hold the handle and the ammo, the other holds the slide/barrel. I make sure when I'm actively driving, both bags are in full view and have the Springfield logo showing. If I leave my car for any reason, one gets locked in the glove compartment, the other in the column between the seats. I know it sounds like overkill, but state gun laws get weird and I don't want to lose my CPA and career over something idiotic.

You talk like you depend on someone else to keep you safe. Look around do you see any cops? There aren’t any.

If I'm roadtripping to see my parents, I bring my gun so my dad and I can go shooting. I'm also not a huge fan of leaving my firearm in my apartment by itself for long periods of time if I can help it. If somebody broke in and stole my firearm and committed crimes with it I'd feel like dog shite.

Glove box, magazine in and none in the chamber. I can load one fast enough if I need to
