I know overcoming poverty certainly makes things more difficult, but I think that also falls into the mental fortitude piece. A lot of people come out of impoverished circumstances and make it. If you can’t figure out a way to work it in or don’t have the will power to work it in, you probably don’t have the drive to make it under ideal circumstances.
that's a bit of a convenient oversimplification and one size fits all generalization

Baseball you know pretty young, probably by 9 or 10. Football they can suck then at 15 develop or the light turns on and they “have it”

have a friend that played football for LSU, his dad is in Tulane's fb HoF, he wouldn't even let his kid play fb till his junior year, kid was a four year starter for Ga Tech, genetics, genetics, genetics

Eh, some kids develop early then kind of stagnate, others develop late.
12-13 you should know if they have legit talent.

Genetics do play a big role regarding football but fortunately there are so many different positions and if you are not big, speed can help, or if slow, size can help. Yep, had a friend that was a fat blob in HS and absolutely sucked, came out senior year for camp and absolutely dominated. Got to play at La Tech. Light bulb finally came on and he worked his arse off after junior year

What a poor take, honestly. I am not sure when your daughter played but in Softball that is simply not the case...

My oldest always had "it" from a determination and coordination standpoint. He dominated in soccer and basketball from the time he started at 4 up until everyone but him hit puberty around 13. He was still good enough to start on very competitive teams but it became real clear that D1 was not in his future in those sports. He kept playing soccer but focused on cross country and track and was able to make varsity on a 7A state championship team as a freshman but saw minimal gains the next few years due to being late with puberty. Fortunately he had the drive to push through and is now heading into his 3rd season running D1. He's not elite but is in the top 1/3rd of the conference in cross country. The drive and willingness to put in the work was there from day one but I would say you have to wait until after his/her peers hit puberty before really being able to know if the kid will be an elite athlete.

was most definitely the case when she stopped playing(about 16 years ago,) she used to get cold calls from all over the country from schools offering her some type of scholarship, she has a friend that has a national championship ring in water polo from USC that can't even swim, they just needed to fill up their quota for Title IX reasons

I see lots of posts about genetics and I don’t disagree but my son is a junior in HS and is being told he’ll have a chance to play in college, he’s a DE. I played sports but never anywhere close to college material and wife outside of doing gymnastics when young is far from athletic. There is nobody in our families that played collegiate sports, he may not even be good enough when it’s all said and done but coaches think he will. I don’t know where he got his size from but if he didn’t look like a younger twin of me I’d doubt he was mine
At his position I never knew he has “it” outside of coaches this year telling me. 5A school and he played well last year but never stood out. I think it’s more of a potential thing due to his size I guess
He never played baseball and still looks ridiculous trying to dribble a basketball

The problem is that many parents think their kids have it when they really don’t.

I raised 2 boys but neither were very interested in sports so I never got the chance to see this. My youngest started playing football freshman year and my oldest did 1 year of baseball, he was the more athletic one but just didn't care for it. I forced him into jiu jitsu at 12 and he's still doing it at 19. My youngest was so raw, after freshman year summer camp as a defensive end, he asked me after practice when he's gonna be able to catch a touchdown, I realized how bad I failed him and apologized. They watch Saints football but not to the passion I did at their ages.

I remember 3-4 guys from elementary/JH baseball that were like this, usually had a dad that was a rec coach, and didn’t even make it HS varsity ball for whatever reason.

My boy Braxton hits nukes. I only pay for the best hitting coaches in the area. Looking forward to starting coaches pitch next year.
