I kind of like my old lady having her own stash, we bought a boat and slip last year, believe me I just wanted the slip, it has a bar(with commercial grade Margarita machine,) a disco ball(with strobes,) a fridge, running water, satellite dish, a couple of big screens, boat is nice, I'm eyeing the slip and she says "you buy the boat and I'll get the slip?" couple of weeks ago I was out of town for work for a few days, came back home and noticed new tires on my truck, I asked her what the heck? and she said "tread was getting pretty worn so I took it in and replaced them" does stuff like that all of the time

I tried the same account thing when we first got married. Back then we were poor. Stopped for gas one day and my debit card wouldn't work. Had to call a buddy to get 10 Bucks to get home from work. She had over drafted the account.
I decided that shite wouldn't happen again. Separate accounts for 15 years since. I pay most of the Bills and she buys the household stuff and food. She also decided to work part time so she could be at all school functions. It works for us and I'll never be embarrassed because my card doesn't work again.

The wife and I split everyday bills 50/50. We're both retired and our major expenses have been paid off. If we have to pay for something that 90% affects me (medical mostly), I pay for it. If the shoe is on her foot then I help pay for hers when she lets me. We've been married for over 18 years and I can honestly say I've never heard her ask "honey, can I have some money" to do this or that.

She make X% of our income, she pays equal X
% of bills, and i do the same. We each pay our own cell phones, student loans, and car notes, and split the cost of family vacations, groceries, and outings. Seems to be working fine 6 years into our marriage.

What if he wants expensive cars and she doesn’t? They can each decide

We have our own personal checking and savings account and we have a joint checking and a joint savings account.

We have our direct deposits set up to post a dedicated amount from each check into joint checking to cover the bills (home upkeep as well as mortgage, utilities, etc). The rest goes in our personal accounts and we both keep an eye on the bills (although I am better about watching over the joint account than she is). Excess monies we get jointly go into joint savings.

I think I make about 4% more than my wife and we share one checking account and one money market account. She did enter the marriage with a decent amount of home equity, whereas I stuck to renting while single, so I consider my higher income as a wash.

The wife is giving up a perfectly good 08 Honda Accord that's loaded.

Maybe it was loaded in 2008 but when I think of a loaded vehicle today most of those options didn’t exist back then

Heated/cooled seats?
Bluetooth?
Touchscreen?
Lane departure warning?
Forward collision warning?
Park assist?
