Macy's Furloughs Most Of Its 130,000 Workers

quote:

All of Macy's stores, closed since March 18, will stay shut "until we have clear line of sight on when it is safe to reopen." Its online business remains open, but the company said it has lost the majority of its sales due to the store closures.

When we get the all-clear, these companies are going to have to try to grab these employees back, and get them back working again. I think that's going to be very hard for some of these companies, like Macy's, that was struggling before these events occured.

I think Macy's is going to look much, much different when it reopens, if it does at all.

I think a lot of businesses are just not going to reopen.

They need to play their part. We’re two weeks behind Italy.

Aside from Macy’s what are some others do you feel are not going to reopen?

I know you are being sarcastic but there are a ton of otherwise intelligent people that continue to run with this narrative

Any number of restaurants / bars

Retailers that have pre-existing financial issues

Movie Theaters (the other night we paid $19.99 to buy a movie on Disney Plus that was in the theaters when they closed. That ability to sell current-run movies directly to consumer might generate a tidal wave.)

what about Macy's hiring pool make you think it will be difficult for them to rehire workers?

The business landscape will look very different come September 1, 2020. A lot of businesses will have to hire and train an entirely new staff. A lot of businesses will not have the capital and/or will to reopen. A lot of businesses will realize they are way too fat and will reopen with fewer staff and a different business model.

It is going to be very interesting when all of this moves on.

I know of many people who are laying off staff due to a lack of work and are looking at how they can modernize their business and come back lean. A lot of people will not have jobs, even once their former employer reopens.

JCPenney. They were having issues before all of this happened.

This feels like the final nail in the coffin.

Retail and restaurants will have plenty of supply to choose from with regards to employees.

What I think will happen is many won't hire as many back, and learn to operate more efficiently.

JC Penney who's been bleeding for years
Any Sears that was open after they purged stores 2 yrs ago
Belk?
Dillard?

Brick & mortar Department Stores have been struggling for many years and this extended closure may do them in for good.
