A million dollar home is not a mansion. But think about everything this includes:

- lawncare
- landscaping
- gardening
- maid/butler
- Maintenance for broken appliances, plumbing, A/C, satellite, whatever
- Probably pool maintenance

The costs add up quickly.

The problem is that before you buy something that big, you should pay the BEST inspection company in town to sign off on all of the components of the property. Then if they are bad, you have a legal course to take against said inspection company.

Or, the inspection company finds issues, and the buyer negotiates for lower cost OR walks away from the deal.

Sounds like your friend is a dumb arse if this wasn't done before purchasing.

I did some construction out in english turn. You wouldn't believe the houses I walked into. From the outside they looked like huge mansions. The insides were atrocious. Spider webs everywhere. Haven't been dusted in YEARS. shite, pops keeps the 1400 square foot homestead in kenner better than that.

To be fair, he was warned that the air conditioning units were on their last legs, but there were definitely things the inspector totally missed. The leaking roof had been ghetto fixed by the previous poor owner. From everything I've heard, it sounds like the previous owner was in over his head and unable to upkeep the house. But this guy says it was worth it because they got such a deal on the house. I personally would rather pay more upfront for a house and know what I'm paying. Getting a deal and waiting for huge costs to hit left and right just doesn't seem worth it.

It's really quite easy. My executive butler (who lives on site, of course) ensures the cleaning staff get their work done, coordinates with the kitchen staff, handles repairs, etc. I wonder sometimes how you poor people get by without it.

I think the 10% also includes property taxes. In some areas, property taxes are outrageous.

My house was built in the late teens, maybe early 20's, and I don't even have those kinds of problems.

Biggest problem we have is having to replace rotting siding boards and a hand full of soft spots in the exposed rafters.

7000 is a nice size, but hardly massive in mansion sense. I know a couple of people that have some close to that or bigger in size and just maintain their home like normal people. Some have staff and some hire service contractors to maintain many items.

It sounds like the home had many items in disrepair and unmaintained. Tell them to thank their inspector. They did get one with a great reputation before buying a home of that size and price right?
