As a 59er I would suggest the following....you come to realize the more precious things life has to offer as you age and if life's circumstances don't fit into those handful of precious things then it is not worth your time and attention.
When you encounter a problem I would suggest two notions
1. Will this matter before me today still matter when I wake up 20 years from now, and
2. Particularly when dealing with others I would suggest...ask yourself 'if I die tonight will the problem remain before them'...if yes, own your portion - if not, simply step aside and allow it to exit Stage Right

Everyone changes their worldview with experience but right now, the younger generation is in a media environment that sensationalizes every issue to one extreme or the other, while the media we grew up on simply reported the news.

It's about more than just news and news sources. These days you can just walk up to your computer and read opinions and viewpoints from millions of people around the world. Previous generations didn't have that kind of access to information. If you're curious about a certain topic now, you can just hit up Google with a simple query and read in-depth analysis for hours, right then and there. Before, you had to go to the library, find books, write certain people, etc.

It's all relative. When I was young, in college, I thought I had all the answers and was smarter than the 50 year old plus old farts .. Now that I am less than a decade away from being one of those old farts, I realize I didn't have all the answers then and they aren't so dumb. Like clockwork, you'll eventually become an old fart and feel the same way ..

My dad is 84 and he stays on the internet for a couple of hours every day. He looks at pictures of the great grandchildren on FB, reads the Advocate & NOLA.com LSU Sports sections, reads one subscription LSU site and the Fox News website. You can lead a horse to high tech, but he's still going to find the same ole drinking hole.

e had dial up news servers, data bases, and message boards long before Google. My mother who would be 85 if she were alive had CDS of the bible, various book collections, art collections back in the mid 90s. The idea that most people above 55 are computer/internet illiterate is nonsense. Someone 65 or older today that worked in a office environment or most private businesses probably used a PC for 30 years and the internet when it became essential for business. I am 60 and got my first computer in 1982 as did most of my peers. I can't think of anyone I know under 80 years old that has not been using the internet for a decade or more. Even in the days of AOL in the 90s the elderly were a fast growing user segment.

Where did I say that?
Nowhere in any of my posts have I attempted to disparage older people or say they're computer illiterate. They simply grew up in a different time.
I work in IT. I am well aware that plenty of people did have access in the 80s and 90s, especially older business people. These people in question, for the most part, DON'T have a simplistic view of society or anything like that. These are well-informed people.
However, there are many, many older people who never had access compared to my generation, in which almost everyone has grown up with access. There's a complete cultural difference in the mainstream in how the common person consumes information.

Some of it is people get set in their ways. It will happen to you, too. But part of it is a willingness to say what's on your mind. An old codger doesn't care what his frat level is, or if he's politically correct. He doesn't have to conform to what his supervisor at work thinks, what his in laws think, or what some random twentysomething thinks. His life is what it is, and he's okay with that.
You think he dresses funny, or his views are outdated? He doesn't give a shite. Just like the old dude he thought was behind the times in 1963 didn't give a shite.
