Born to dig. I'm in a world of hurt when the toads come out of hibernation.

Your only option is to fight him. I did it with mine. I battled that beast for about 5 minutes. He still digs holes so it doesn't work but if I were you, that would be the first option.

crushed red pepper in every hole.

We used a shock collar on my dog for this. Google is your friend.
The setting should be low enough that it doesn't hurt the dog but simply "tweaks" him. You should put it on your thigh and test it before putting it on the dog (seriously).
Have him wear the collar a day or two for 5 or so hours a day so he gets used to it and doesn't suspect it is the source of the shock. Then, on a Saturday, when you have the time, put it on him and put him outside with the collar on the low setting. Get to a place where you can watch him without him being aware of you and then sit there for as long as it takes for him to begin to dig. Pop him when he first paws the ground. He'll jump back and look around, then settle down, then try it again. Pop him. Don't let him backslide--you can't then turn him loose and let him dig with no consequences, or he won't be convinced not to dig. He'll "take his chances."
After one or two days of doing this, for just an hour or so at a time, we broke our dog of digging for grubs or any other reason. She is now 3 y.o., loves us, and does not dig.

I was about to ask if he'd rather have the moles.

LIES !!! I saw where she tweeted for someone to call PETA on your crazy arse......

We did this also, dont let a wife/girlfriend control the shock, or as with mine at first he could barely feel it.

are the holes close to the fence?
quote:oh ok. i thought maybe he was trying to make a break for it. he just wants to go under the patio and die. two of my dogs died like that back in the day. don't let em spend too much time alone outside cause its a bitch pulling a dead dog from under the house.
nope, patio

Shock collar. Also heard bury a blown up balloon if digging in same spot. Balloon pops and scares the shite of dog. Not sure if it works or not.

Landmine. Same general concept. Definitely works.

Excercise....... Dog needs more excercise. I run mine and he doesn't dig. I don't, yard looks like the freakin' surface of the moon.
