How did the "cell phones blow up gas station" myth get started?

I had a random woman yell at me b/c I was talking on the phone while pumping gas. She said I was going to blow her up.
I never met someone who actually took that warning seriously.

I was at a RaceTrac putting gas in my car when that rumor was big. Station attendant came over the loudspeaker and told me to put my phone away as I was going to cause a fire. I yelled back that the phone thing was a BS myth and she promptly shut my pump down. I was pissed.

This started in the EU. I moved over the UK back in 1999 and it was a law there. You pulled a phone out at a gas station and most people there would tell you to put it away. Big signs on the pumps. You could get a ticket for it and it was expensive.
Eventually that horseshite makes it over to the U.S.

Did they do the same thing to people who pumped while keeping their engines running? B/c that apparently blows up gas stations, too.

You ever heard of calculated risk? It's possible the battery on your phone could explode. igniting vapors killing you and possibly others. Put the phone down baw

Because if it's happened to 0.00000001% of the population everyone has to lose their minds over it

My uncle does this in Texas. Never met someone who does it before. Is it not bad for your car?

Oh for fricks sake. Has there even been one case like that in history?

I think people took Final Destination a little too seriously.

In cold weather a static spark can ignite gas fumes. Have a buddy who was pumping gas and got into his car to stay warm. Slight malfunction with the pump and when he opened his car door it sparked the fumes and started a massive for that burned his car to the ground. He escaped with just some singing on his body and clothes.

That has nothing to do with using a cell phone

If I saw you talking on a Samsung Galaxy with Li-ion battery I would spray my gasoline hose at you and watch the fireworks.

That's why I attributed the fire to static electricity. I wasn't blaming cell phones. Just relaying a tangentially related story.

What's the difference between me talking on my Samsung Galaxy while pumping and the cell phone (turned on) sitting in my static-y pocket while pumping?

Well, i never turn my car off while pumping gas wither and haven’t blown up.
Been doing that for over 20 years now. Not sure, if maybe I’m doing it wrong but still haven’t blown up yet.

That was static electricity issue. Not a cell phone issue.
The fact he was on the phone is inconsequential.

It's more to do with your complete lack of self-awareness. I know it's difficult for the thick-skulled to understand but you are pumping a highly flammable liquid and gas stations are places where exercising a little situational awareness benefits everyone. You are probably the same type of POS that is on their phone before, during, and after filling up then leaves their vehicle blocking the pump to go inside to get an energy drink and is still on the phone as you drive out of the gas station, driving over the curb in the process.
