Not even a window unit? The humidity inside must be awful.

I live in a house that’s about 100 years old, and the original inhabitants were newlyweds who lived their whole married lives here, and the widow lived here the rest of her life, which was 1980ish.

There are still people on this street who remember that she never had AC. Not even a window unit. In deep south Louisiana for decades.

My dad remembers that his parents didn’t have AC when he was young, in central LA. In the summer, no covers on the bed and sprawl out.

Visiting my grandparents in Nakatrash parish on their farm in the 70's gave me some insight into living without A/C. They never turned it on but once while I was there for weeks. This was August.

We'd wake up w the sunrise, have a full breakfast, work out in the fields pulling weeds, moving the cows, bushhogging, mending fences, etc. until about 1pm. Then we'd have "dinner", a big spread. We'd lounge around under the shade trees on some old boxsprings, play cards, relax.

Once it cooled off a bit around 5 or so, we'd do more work and then have supper around 7.

At night they did have a whole house fan that would finally cool things down around daybreak.

Oh and the one time they turned on the AC (a window unit for the formal dining room), it was because their Baptist preacher came over for supper one Saturday night.

Spent a couple months overseas where AC was few and far between and I adapted pretty quickly. When I came back I couldn't use the AC in my truck and I'd be freezing anywhere indoors.

Our ancestors also weren't fatasses. I worked a really hard job once where I went from 215 to 175 in a few months and I was cold all the time at that weight.

We live in a society that believes if they're uncomfortable for more than 5 seconds then they're going to die.

In some ways they were, but if AC went away today we’d adjust to it fairly quickly. The human body was designed to adapt to its environment.

I can't believe I'm agreeing with Spleen, but he's right. I have to say there would be a lot of bitching until everyone was acclimated to the heat, and those fat asses who "would die" as they proclaim, would just strengthen the gene pool by doing so.

160 years ago the population north of Mason Dixon line was double what was below. And 1/3 of the people living below the Mason Dixon line, didn't have a choice.

I'd give up AC tomorrow if all of the morons would move back north.

When you're not sitting on your arse playing with your cellphone but are outside playing sports or doing other things you don't notice it as much. And when you go to bed, you can sleep because you are tired. Duh.

Port cities are always important and generally have at least some breeze to them.

Do you not know that the earth has only been very hot since like 50 years ago?

Just listen to anyone talking about "climate equity" and they'll inform your ignorant arse.

That...and they all weighed like 90 pounds. Fat is an incredible insulator.

I grew up without AC.Only time I ever had it was my senior year at the “new” Menard.Went in the Navy at 18 and never had those years either.
You don’t miss what you don’t have, get acclimated to it.

Now,if I knew I couldn’t have AC anymore I’d slit my throat.

lol let me explain. it can never be just the refrigerant. if it's that then you have a leak. however 90% of the time it's the capacitor which costs $15.

It’s part of the reason (only one part) that modern society is so fat. Used to our bodies were frequently stressed by being hot or cold and we burned calories to try to stay at an ideal temp.
