I don’t think anyone is saying what he’s doing is illegal. I think many people are just wondering why so many willingly follow and give money to such a hypocrite.

Jesus said to go and make disciples...

He said that to men...

Which man, on this Earth, is not a hypocrit? Want a hint? ZERO

Fallen man has a duty to lead fallen man to Christ.

That's not me saying it, that's Jesus. I tend to be serious about listening to Jesus.

That’s why Paul is my second fav. He was about as imperfect as one could be and ended up a cornerstone of the Christian faith….

Paul's conversion would be like Himmler converting to Judaism and becoming their leader. NGL I wouldn't have trusted him for a good long time.

So, if theres a lesson to be had from all this, it’s for Christians to get it firmly planted in their head that Church is a hospital for sinners, and every single one of us are JUST THAT.

I really like that view.
Maybe hospital and/or rehab, trying to overcome a generic sin addiction, which we can hope to only manage but never beat completely or permanently.

Back in the 80s my company had a job at the Bible College installing some equipment. Our crew was constantly getting into trouble. One day someone called our company complaining that one of our guys was wearing an AC/DC concert t-shirt. The next day they flipped and called the company again because another one of our guys was wearing a Sex Wax tshirt. Good times.

They all agree that you must dress funny and you can't do perfectly reasonable things, in the name of Jesus. Doesn't matter that his first miracle was water into wine, wine is still wrong.

That's changing. A HS classmate of mine is an Assemblies of God preacher. He has a postgrad degree, his wife dresses modestly, but normally. One of his good friends is a Catholic priest. Pentecostals are much more mainstream than they used to be.

At this point, Swaggart should have resigned and disassociated himself from his church. While he can (and hopefully did) receive forgiveness from God, IMO, being caught for a second time in an adulterous situation should have been the death knell for his days as a minister.

His denomination tried to discipline him but they didn't have any way to make it stick. This is a problem (or advantage, depending on how you look at it) of a lot of pentecostal/charismatic denominations. The preacher really is an entity unto himself. Often times he owns the church building himself. Sometimes there's a church governing board he answers to, but usually not. He controls the finances, he does the hiring and firing. It becomes like a family business, with the preacher's offspring inheriting the job. Some, probably most preachers handle this well. When one goes off the rails it's not easy to reign him in.

The second time he sinned he basically said it was his business and seemed very un-repentive.

How big was his congregation in the 80s before the scandals. Bigger than healing place at its peak? How big was healing place at its peak?

I have no opinions of the man himself, having never met him. Concerning his message, other than tongues, it is very fundamental and sound. You don’t get the “name it and claim it” heresy that is so prevalent today. He’s a very effective communicator. Donnie does not come off as well to me. Having said all of that, I think his indiscretions should have disqualified him as a pastor and leader. No one is without sin but some sins are more destructive than others to the cause of Christ, publicly speaking. If, a big if, you can look past the man, the message is solid and encouraging.

That estate is probably owned by the church and is considered his patronage. So it exists as a tax free property. Try doing that for yourself at the tax office.
