I will say that some C17s fly over our house and my son wants to know where it came from and the altitude etc.

Then when we look at it I get in a rabbit hole.

What you’re referring to is RVSM airspace which allows 1,000’ vertical separation as long as both planes have the minimum RVSM equipment on board and operating.

RVSM airspace is between 29k & 41k feet.

transiting across the Atlantic, it was very common to see other planes in the air at 35000 feet in both directions.
