440/727. It's a factory white wing, white interior buddy seat car with column shift. The sheet metal is all original. The motor and transmission have been rebuilt. Needs all new interior. Keeping the exterior as is.

I asked her how much she wanted for her note.

She responds with, “less than $1000”.

Abso-fricking-lutely not.

Aren't you a rich doctor, Scruffy?

I had to buy a new car 2 weeks ago. The interest rates are turrible but I have a small loan that will be gone in less than 24 months.

Scruffy is at least a doctor.

Wife is also a doctor.

Any car note more than $500 is insane, in Scruffy’s opinion.

Scruffy’s current note for his Canyon is $240.

That is appropriate.

Why was this the question you asked?

Because it will give an idea of what she thinks is reasonable and affordable, compared to current household expenses, and may alter what direction we go in for vehicle choice.

I don’t normally push back against her thoughts/decisions, unless it comes to large purchases.

Our home, for example. She loved the one that was 50% more expensive, but in a substantially worse neighborhood and was most likely substantially overpriced.

I’m not an a-hole about it.

We have a kid now. Things are increasingly more expensive and she, prior to us dating, was not the best with money.

We make good money. I don’t ever want to feel strapped for cash.

Wouldn't that be the actual price of the vehicle? Who cares about the note?

You must not be either if you are concerned with note instead of price.

A financially responsible doctor? Wow.

Unless you buy a beater or put a ton down, it will be hard to get a $240 note with the current rates.

Well, both are a factor.

One impacts the other.

Who said I wasn’t concerned with price?

My post clearly implies that I am concerned with price.

We can’t purchase a car outright right now since the baby, new home, moving expenses, etc.

The note, and what we can pay comfortably is important.

I’m cheap as frick. Not sure that is a good thing overall though.

I’m the guy who puts off buying the $40 item and leaves it in his Amazon cart for a few months because “it isn’t the right time”.

I’m also not a “car person”.

I don’t really care as long as it has AC and runs well.

Only reason I bought new was because my 06 Honda died during Covid and Used vs New prices were pretty damn similar.

It seems you were more concerned with note when you asked your wife what she wanted the note to be, instead of asking her how much she wanted to spend on a car.

I can relate, but lifestyle creep still happens for us tightwads. I imagine your kids are young, so it usually begins after the daycare costs go away and the career trajectory gets more concrete.

The price came up first and it was followed by “how much do you want to pay monthly”.

$500 for 60 months is about my limit too. I'll make myself save whatever is required to make that number.

Yep. Going to have to buy the fourth family car in a couple more years when my youngest hits 16.

We timed the hand-me-down pretty well this time and gave the youngest my wife's old paid off car and bought the wife a new one.

I doubt it'll last her through college though so I'll probably have to buy another one if she doesn't wreck it first.

I got $240 for 60 months back in 2022.

Could pay it off, but the interest rate of 3.6% is nice compared to now.

Getting below 6% is lucky now.
