Apples are called "false fruit" but are still fruit.
I can't remember exactly how they get classified from my botany class nearly 20 years ago, but has something do with how they're formed.

Vegetable has many similar but different meanings whether the context is biological, culinary or whatever. Its most general meaning is in the word itself, edible vegetation. So all fruits are vegetables, and mushrooms are vegetables.
