Tell me about it if I'm in a 15 mph zone and my son isnt buckled up i get a ticket, but they can go on a field trip on I-10 w/ no seat belts.

The bus was purchased new in 2008 and was equipped with lap belts for students.

That of course doesn't mean using them is enforced.

Just think about 45 7-10 year olds buckled up when the bus gets hit and catches fire.

Not impossible but more improbable with a diesel engine.

Putting my child on a bus is scary after seeing they way bus drivers drive and how people do not follow bus passing laws

Sad news indeed I hope the families can recover in time

Wasn't referring to this bus, just in general. I imagine there could have been even more had every kid NOT been wearing one.

I think it is very fortunate that only 4 kids and the driver were on the bus. Could have been a lot worse.

Although I do wonder if a seat belt would even have a play in this, after falling vertically and then rolling. If buckled in you will still most certainly contact something.

Do they teach bus drivers not to swerve to avoid collisions? I mean, FFS, if you have kids on a bus, why wouldn't you just take the hit which will do minor damage to a school bus, rather than run the bus off the road, let alone a bridge. I'm sure first natural reflex is to swerve, as if you were driving your own car.

A car swerved into the lane (in order to avoid another one) and ran the bus off the road.

That area is pretty bad. The 610/45 exit backs up badly and people always get over at the last minute.

any of those places in Houston where you have to get from 610 over to a left exit for 45 or 290 is a freaking nightmare. nearly died more than my fair share of times.

I do not disagree with the safety they will bring, but kids don't just sit calmly in a seatbelt. They'll move the strap, get tangled in it trying to face the seat behind them or across from them. Then when an accident happens, they aren't in the seatbelt properly and it can do more damage than not wearing one.
This was also a freak accident. In most schoolbus accidents, the other car involved loses. Not the bus.

I'm not an attorney, but there may be some legal issue as to why there aren't any seatbelts in a school buses. You figure with all the advancements in child sheltering, seatbelts in school buses would be one.

Looks like one of the families are already wanting to sue

They can't at least wait until after the grieving is over.

It's really sad that within hours of their child dying, they have managed to find the time to get an attorney, plan legal action and hold a press conference.

Edit: I'm sure the attorney found them, which is even shittier. But it's sad to see a family thinking about getting paid just hours after this happens, and broadcasting it for all to see

I wonder if the attorney found them, not the other way around.

I wonder how many other kids parents are gonna sue for damages.

I remember back in the late 90's a bus got in a very minor fender bender in port Allen somewhere and every kid on that bus parents got some money from it.

Cheaper to settle than fight through years of litigation. Isn't that usually the case?

Shoot for a high number to settle knowing they not gonna get the amount. Get a counter offer for a much lower (but good) amount.

Quick settlement done.

Did any fellow H-Town brethren see the 10pm news last night? The parents were being interviewed and they were saying how they are going to sue the school, sue the district, sue TXDOT for guardrail failure...it was nauseating to see that. No emotion or distress from losing a child, only how they wanted to blame and sue everybody for $$$$$.

If my kid died earlier that day, I would be balled up in a fetal position not wanting to talk to anybody.

Mariya Johnson and Janecia Chatman - RIP.
