re: Houston is America's fastest growing Metropolis and it's most resilient economy

There's a 75% chance I'll be moving there in Sept/Oct, and I am excited. If it all works out, it will be a great career move AND I will be closer to home (BR). I've never really hated Houston though.

think when people think of Houston, they still think of 15-20 years ago. They don't see the development and improvements and how it's grown and has actually become nice. There's nowhere else I'd rather live, it helped turn my career around and I'm happy. I hated Texas with a passion, then moved here for a job in 2006 and it was the best decision of my life.
There's somewhere that's home for everyone. One of the great things about the USA is we have so many varied living/work situations we can always find "home." What I might find to be a horrible place, someone else may love. I've got relatives in Bellaire and it's not my thing, but they have been there 30 years and love it.

So there was a net job loss in Houston during whatever time period we are talking about? The link didn't work for me, so I am just trying to confirm the claim here.
No idea, but I don't this Houston will be recession proof if the American oil industry goes to shite. They are not dependent on oil alone, but no doubt their economy will see a hit.

In your defense, it's a guarantee that some people who will bash Houston in this thread have never been to the city.
I lived in Houston for three years it was great, tons of stuff to do (I really miss the outdoor events at Miller park) really good ethnic food, but it's just to damn big. And those steel plates were everywhere back then, someones BIL had a good deal.

Cool, but frick that traffic

Lived here for the past 3-4 months. It's not this awe inspiring mecca of happiness, but it's now awful either. I'm in The Woodlands, so I'm not technically in Houston, but I surely can't complain.
Traffic sucks, but only because I work all over the city. I'd have lived closer to the office if I had one office to go to, which would have reduced the commute.

I don't hate Houston itself, I just hate how spread out everything is. Its the same way in Dallas. I love it here in Alexandria. Nearly everything I need is either in walking distance, or near a Metro station.

Houston is not pretty, but it thrives. In the decade to 2010, the population of its metro area grew more than that of any other American city. Between 2009 and 2013 its real GDP increased by 22%, more than twice as fast as the American economy as a whole.
Ya because of oil, now that it is crashing lets see how resilient it is...

I'm in the Woodlands and have come to love Houston. When I go back to Baton Rouge and experience some of the "cultural" elements, I thank God I don't live there anymore.
That said, I adore NO but to visit only.
So many will bash Houston for all the wrong reasons, but I do understand not wanting to visit. It's value is in living here. Btw, the Mexican culture here is actually a bright spot. Love their food, their smiles, their work ethic, and their Catholic virtues. Typically they're hard working, nice people.

It is still located in northen mexico though. I would take being dropped butt arse naked into a nigerian jungle with nothing but a pair of good hiking shoes and a machete over living in tejas.

Well, you could always just move closer to everything you need.
I have a 5 min drive, or 15 min bike ride, to work and can walk/bike to tons of bars, restaurants, stores, and parks.

Houston economy is pretty diversified now-a-days, although still a lot of oil.
I was born and raised in New Orleans and live near the Woodlands now. As much as I love New Orleans, I'd pick here in Houston to raise my family any day. Great public schools. Great housing market. Excellent job market (even with oil down). Not as much "cultcha", but the positives far outweigh the negatives.

I got the best of both worlds. I work in Houston and live in NOLA.
