There was a very interesting read about Russia doing osmething similar when we closed their consulate in SF. Honestly, it was a good thing if anyone wants to read this through.

In short, SF is a good area for the Russians because of the opportunity to steal/spy on tech coming out of Silicon Valley plus there are some DoE offices nearby. It's also believed that the Russians were trying to mark and track the underground communication nodes in the area.
Like I said long - but very interesting. And as soon as it was closed there were pillars of smoke coming out of the building as well.

Very little of what China has wasn't based on stolen IP. They were behind because of their bout with communism and didn't see a way to catch up without stealing.

Were they ordered closed before or after they were burning documents. From the article I got the impression they were ordered closed because they were burning the documents.

I can't tell with the crappy reporting... did the US order the consulate closed, and then the Chinese started burning docs?
Or did the Chinese start burning docs, and then the US ordered the consulate closed?
If it's the first, your thought makes sense. If it's the second, I wonder if the firemen saw some shady stuff in there.

Curious how the big companies and universities feel about this. Surely the O&G majors can't be happy their IP is being stolen, right? Yet they continue to hire Chinese nationals.

my local ABC news station is scrambling to turn this into a Trump vs China thing and hasn't mentioned why the consulate is on fire or the pictures of documents being burnt in the courtyard. nope, just more "this is another example of racism in America" propaganda.

I work in Houston oil & gas for a fairly small company with a niche technology. At a trade show a few years ago, a random Chinese person (no company affiliation) asked if they could rent one of our tools for a couple of months. We said no as we do not rent the tools.
A couple of years later, we hired a young Chinese woman (recent college graduate from a US university). She seems very good at her job and is paid fairly low. I’ve started to wonder in recent months if she’s a spy (not really but more of a young never know’).

At the shows like Urtec and HFTC there are always such a steady stream of random Chinese businessmen rolling around.

They were ordered closed over night. By 3AM they were destroying evidence.

Wasn't there a professor at Texas A&M who got busted receiving payments from the CCP? Seems as though I remember a story about that but am fuzzy on the details as to what the payments were for and why it was a big deal.
