You will never find an industry full of more depraved and soulless monsters than sex trafficking.

People who participate and facilitate sex trafficking need to be immediately lit on fire once they're convicted.

Meh. Prostitution is a victim-less crime, at least that what a lot of folks on the poli board think.

This is not prostitution which implies willful participation through your own complete free will, this is slavery through force and coercion from someone else.

There's a world of difference.

You should do a bit more research before drawing such a conclusion. The people in this industry are predators in every sense of the word. They do not prey on strong minded and confident young women, just as lions do not prey on the strongest and fittest animals. They fish for weak girls, and then psychologically groom them with compliments and statements that "support" the child's point of view (you are right, your parents are treating you bad...). They then slyly throw in a request or two at opportune moments to gradually get the child to engage in behavior that they morally would not until it seems normal (starts with things like "let me see that beautiful smile, then progresses to compliments on clothes, then body , then ). There is no initail overt request to perform a degrading act or even "flash". It's subtle and gradual until they get a psychological hold and then they attack. It's very scary and very real. I encourage anyone with children to have periodic talks with them about these predators on a regular basis.

You seem to know quite a few details, Michael.

I worked on this issue with LEO and the court systems. Louisiana identifies on average approximately 120 minors per year as victims of human trafficking. Most occur on either the I 20 or I 10 corridor. It is very real and very scary.

I wonder how much of it is exaggerated in order to justify funding.

Excellent question. Honestly, I wondered thens same thing when I was asked to assist on this issue. Louisiana takes a conservative approach before classifying a minor as a victim of HT. Unfortunately there is no universal definition , but last year the Feds suggested a definition that is based on logic and evidence. Some states are more liberal in how they identify victims, but that should change soon as the fed definition is tied to potential funding , which requires data collection. Louisiana has an "A" rating from the US DOJ and is one of the few states that rolls up data to two centralized sources in an effort to identify all victims. The funding (from a federal and state dollar perspective) is very small. Louisiana (at the state level and a few local jurisdictions) won some small grants bc of the laws and processes it put into place. Most services provided to victim are funded by private dollars. If the suspect is a parent or caregiver as defined by federal law, then public funds can be used to provide services to the minor. If not(85% fall into this category) private or donated dollars pay for the services.

Someone asked Dear Abbey if she believed in the death penalty. She said that statistics show the death penalty does not cut down on crime.

But, she wrote, it certainly cuts down on repeaters!
