I have a family member in hospice that I will be moving to a nice retirement community. They say they take care of everything, but have others in similar situations run in to problems with a community and care?

They will cover anything that’s hospice related for the most part. I worked in hospice for 3 years or so.

They usually do take care of everything and will warn you if they don't. Usually you do not get surprises.

Just make sure they have a medical power of attorney set up and everyone is on the same page as far as level of care desired.

Is this true comfort care only and we are going to die soon or is this continue medical care but the person will likely die within 6 months or so?

My dad was on home hospice for two years before he passed away in May . They were a blessing for sure. I remember meeting them for the first time sobbing uncontrollably thinking he was going to pass that week , I know he wouldn’t have made it as long as he did without them

Hospice is a truly amazing organization. Dealt with them for both my parents, and last year with my brother.

This. They will do everything they can to make a person's last days in comfort.

Man, sorry you've been through so much.

Thanks, for the responses everyone. So far I've been impressed. Good to hear no one has had any issues. Makes me feel much better.

Guess it depends on the situation. My mom was in hospice but she was completely unconscious the entire time and it was only about 5 days. Logistically it was much easier to go to a hospice facility. We used Clarity House on Bluebonnet and they were fantastic.

I wish you and your family the best through a difficult time. My grandma is in her final days, perhaps hours, after a long brutal battle with Alzheimer's. The individuals involved with her hospice care have been nothing short of phenomenal both with her care and helping support my grandfather as much as possible.

Home hospice is not an option here. It would be depressing as frick because she'd be alone. I'm not in a position to be here (we've been told 2 months) and need to leave to work, etc., but will be back at "the end". I found a nice senior living place where she will have a studio type apartment and hospice will come there daily. I know at the end she won't be there mentally, but for now her mind is still there. This place has hourly activities and happy hour every day. She isn't a drinker but I told her she better go daily and get her a cocktail. Trying to make this a positive thing rather than send her home to die.

I'm just having a lot better peace of mind that everyone here has had good experiences with the care!

I have a bunch of siblings and we’ve been blessed to be able to manage 24 hour care for my mom at home with hospice support. They’ve been great.

For my grandmother, weren’t able to provide that kind of care 18 years ago when we ata different point in our lives. She was in nursing home and it didn’t go so well ( not hospice).

If you go with a facility, choose wisely, and think hard about the specific needs of your loved one.

Go visit them daily if possible, even if briefly.

Take notes. Record all of your thoughts about their condition, and take notes on everything said and done by the staff and doctors. For various reasons, treatment “teams” don’t communicate with each other as well as they should (they’re human).

Good luck and God bless you.

Try to remember that each day of life is a gift from God.

So this will be outpatient hospice care with her home being an Assisted Living Facility. The hospice will pay for everything related to the terminal diagnosis (Pharmacy, DME, Medical Supplies). They will not pay for room and board or for any curative measures.

Yes she is in inpatient until 2/22 then going outpatient. But, I was told she can transition back to inpatient when it's time if she chooses. I guess that's nice.

my mother had excellent support from hospice...

but we (as a family) were very lucky that my youngest sister had moved in with her...

but being under hospice meant she was kept comfortable until she was ready to go...

UPDATE: I guess we are about a month in at this point. Things have taken a severe downward turn. You know who has never contacted me. The hospice care or facility she is living in. I AM THE NUMBER 1 CONTACT. They literally don't give a frick. The only update I get is from my aunt who has had to move in to the assisted care facility because things have gotten so bad and she's fallen with no one to help, among all the other symptoms of pre-active dying. And all I've done is fight with the facility she's in because they over charged her $1000 thinking it'd slip through the cracks. Why can't they just not screw people over and make this easy.
