Can I still keep calling it pink juice?

sure, its probably like calling a soft drink a "coke". Just a nickname that stuck I suppose. If you tell your vet to bring the "pink juice" they'll likely know what you mean I'd imagine.

we walked up to the rail at FG Good Friday last year. First race we watch, the field crosses the finish line and three horses got tangled up- ground/air, ground/air, ground/air.
One horse in particular tried to stand and his right front leg was completely fractured- looked like a propeller twisting under his knee. Poor fricker just flopped over agonal. A couple of guys jumped on top of him to keep him down. Out came the ambo and tarp.
I'm fairly certain they nuked him on the spot and winched him into the wagon.
It was a ghastly way to start our afternoon.

They may use a captive bolt method, but I am hard pressed to believe a reputable (yeah, right) track used an actual firearm to dispatch a horse.

Happened. Early 1980's. No way they are going to load a busted up horse onto a trailer or vehicle and cart it off screaming just to take it behind the barn. They had the tarps and did it right there on the track. Like I said, I would have expected them to inject it but they shot it and the sound was clearly audible.

UK, sure. Hell, they may be using a firearm at shittier tracks in the US if they have absolutely no choice. Again, it depends on the injury and if the track vet is there. But I'll still bet money its not a common practice in the states. And I double down they don't do it at FG. Especially on the track within ear shot/sight of the crowd

That's because horses don't feel pain.

what does a horse's scream sound like?

and I'm not arguing they don't sometimes euthanize them before loading them. Why do you think there is a winch in the ambulance? But I would ask for proof a firearm was used to put the horse down in the story you shared. And I can assure you they will load that "busted up" "screaming" horse in a trailer and haul him away before having to deal with him in front of the public.

Exactly. They'll drag something on the ambulance with bones poking out if it is in any way possible to get it away from the crowd.

Braying or whatever the frick you call it when a horse carries on. I am not a horse guy.

My parents were back then (owners and all that) but they are off in TX now.

Me too

I mean, my horse will scream at me if he sees me stop at another stall first. Or at feeding time. Or in response to his name (he thinks he's a dog), but never from pain. And he's had some really bad injuries over the years.

Had a horse at Belmont one day, had about a 15 length lead coming to the wire, then dropped like it was shot with a Sniper Rifle. Horse had a heart attack and dropped immediately.

Was about 5 feet from the Finish line.

Julie Krone just stood over the horse as it laid on the sloppy track.

Yeah. That's always a bad one to see. But at least it's a quick death. They just kinda crumple.

I remember crying my eyes out as a kid when Go For Wand broke down.

They don't race harness horses at Belmont, so you'd be safe.

I've witnessed a fair number of equine deaths. I've heard the horse "groan" and make a snorkeling noise on occasion. But a scream is something from a movie death. Maybe they winnie in a panic (like a barn fire) , but its been my experience they don't make much noise at all.

Now feeding time is a whole other issue. Lots of vocalization and kicking, bucking, other posturing at feeding time.
