Most people want to open everything up as soon as possible. But those in charge (i.e., president, governors) are on the hook if things turn real bad once open. So making sure we do it in a smart way is better for our health and their political lives... and it seems everyone, from the president down, are prioritizing the health of the country and their political future over the economy right now.

No one understood the concept of flattening the curve at the start of this, now they completely disregard the initial reasoning behind flattening the curve, which was to prevent hospital overruns.
This is all simply a shifting of the goalposts by idiots who don’t comprehend the reasoning behind it all in the first place.

who are these idiots you speak of?
as far as shifting goal posts - I thought these people were worried that a reopening now would heighten the curve and put that same strain on the medical resources we have been fortunate to avoid in most places sans New York. This is why Trump is on the phone with the Georgia governor now to tell him to roll back his decision to open certain businesses.

That will happen no matter when we reopen.
This is the biggest issue with the lack of understanding of “flattening the curve”.
The area under both curves are the same. It covers the same number of people.
No matter what we do, it will result in a bump in the numbers.
Period.
And currently, hospitals are not being overrun, we have re-allocated resources, and have strengthened testing.
It would be far better to get through whatever bump is going to occur now, rather than later on when respiratory season becomes a bigger issue.

We are absolutely in the best time to address any peaks right now.
Flu season has passed.
There are no other communicable diseases that we have to really worry about.
Only true issue is trauma which peaks in the summer.
frick, people want to push this shite back to the fall when all of the other respiratory viruses decide to give society the middle finger.
There will be a peak no matter what.
Finish it off when it is the only thing we have to worry about.

And New York, who with 262K cases, 20K deaths were screaming that they were being overwhelmed and people were dying in the waiting room just sent the hospital ship back home today.
So even our worst case scenario that has totalled nearly 1/3 of our nations cases and almost half of the deaths hasn't gotten close enough to being overwhelmed that they are sending away excess hospital capacity.
But we need to stay locked down nation-wide??

I think any of the people who were considered essential, and kept working where social distancing wasn't possible, should have been tested from the start, and tested at least every other week. I'm not just talking doctors and nurses, but delivery drivers, grocery store workers, basically anyone having contact with the general public, or co-workers. If they have the virus, with or without symptoms, they don't need to be handling goods that will end up being handled by at risk, or old people.
