Does anyone have any recommendations for homeowners insurance? I'm not interested in Allstate but am interested in any other company that's decent to deal with.

Don’t know if it’s still there, but at one time the La Dept of Insurance had a rate calculator on their website that you could use for comps by parish and property value. There were some smaller companies listed on there with good rates the last time I looked.
I figure that even if it’s a small shop that goes tits up, you can still get coverage through LIGA.

Find an agent and let them do the work. Most represent 2-3 insurance companies. Get 1 or 2 agents on the line and compare you options. Big named ones are typically pretty expensive.
Try a smaller one. JUst make sure you have a flat deductible and not one of those percentage of insured value. Also, make sure you are entitled to depreciation repayment. It's a little more but should you ever replace something (i.e. roof) it could mean the difference of a few thousand dollars.

Plenty of options, just as good on service as the big ones and way better on price.. The bundling thing is also ploy to get you roped into staying with one company forever..
If you're in Louisiana check into companies like Maison, Lighthouse, Gulf States, Gulf Stream, Federated National, Occidental... etc.. A good Independent Agent is the way to go..
