I have traveled to Denver and Seattle frequently the last several years. Those are two hotspots for the tent cities. I’ll add Vancouver in as well.

I found the best defense is to speak Spanish and laugh on the inside when they get all pissed. If they respond in Spanish then I suppose they have earned a buck from me.

ETA: I was in Denver for the All Star Game a couple years back. We stayed blocks from the ballpark, so we mingled in the bars nearby every night. A polite, older, AA lady came up and asked us for money so she could eat. We were drunk and ended up handing her about $12 total. Suddenly, she decided that wasn’t enough because she wanted a whole pizza and a drink. That was my reminder of why I don’t give them money, and to quit trying to be nice.

Just because Louisiana has a democrat Governor, it doesn`t mean we have a majority of democrats here and we surely do not.

Our state government is predominantly Republican.

Only because Democrats ran off Blue Dogs. Louisiana isn't some solid red state. We have had tons of prominent democrat leaders elected.

How is this any different than being robo-called by politicians begging you for money so that they can get a job where they get more of your money while doing nothing? Is it the pant suits?

I put politicians up there as least respectable people.

I’m taking my plumber out for a beer, not Bill fricking Cassidy.

How do people not get this. Louisiana going republican wasn’t a thing until W Bush.

And we have rarely had a Republican Governor. The ones that switch to R after being elected or only switch to R to combat the casinos, aren’t republicans. They just wanted votes in a singular issue.

Specifically what part of the Constitution prevents criminals from being put in jail?

Due process, dipshit. You can't just round citizens up and throw them in jail.

Well, according to the Constitution.

Sure but you can't really lump that group in with the rest of the homeless. Unless you really believed poor financial planning should be punished with incarceration or death.

Loitering, panhandling and vagrancy are crimes in many places across the country. Can you not jail people for breaking the law?

Try again.

No one put a gun to these people's heads and made them become worthless junkies who reject all the help they are given. Actions have consequences.

The only real solution is to give them all fentanyl and let them do what they want to do: die in drug induced euphoria.

Literally agree 100%. Don't know why people keep arguing my pt back at me.

America: own a home or go to jail.

How disingenuous. You have twisted the truth, which is America: public spaces are for the publicly decreed uses.

How would you like it if they camped on your front yard? What about the public sidewalk in front of your house? Tell the truth, at least to yourself.

I wouldn't like it at all. I also think jailing people because they're homeless is moronic.

I have no problem with homeless if they can be self sufficient and not screw up public places.

Hobos used to have camps, but they were more socially aware than todays bums and usually located them in the woods or alleys.

I feel for some trapped there, but they have to learn to start helping themselves at some point.

Being homeless is the height of freedom. I hear people claiming to love freedom all the time while almost simulataneously griping about folks in tents and sleeping under bridge over passes. It ain't for me but not owning anything or having any financial obligations beyond food would be about as free as a person could be....if freedom is your goal.

A yard is not public property. A sidewalk is. Wouldn't matter if one liked it or not it belongs to the homeless and the homeowner a like.

As far as putting them in jail or an asylum simply putting them in a home would be cheaper and we ain't doing that, how we going to pay for the jail and asylums?

Homelessness is a problem that should not exist on the scale it does in the wealthiest nation on earth. Building codes, zoning ordinances, labor laws all have gotten us where we are today....it ain't going to do anything but get worse. The homeless problem in the US has trebled in a period of pretty brisk economic expansion. It'll get far worse when they tides turn.

It woould be far less expensive to simply house them and pay them a guaranteed income...but ain't no way we doing that, we will by god force them to comply or we will spend piles of money keeping them in jail on panhandling charges...

So wrong!

Ronald Regan was not a Democrat and this is his legacy for shutting facilities down thinking they would save money. Old school Republicans knew you had to have some things that were inefficient but needed as they understood we are all children of God. Modern Republicans (leadership, not rank and file) are all about doing what the bean counters want for short term only.

liar

Why are you spreading this horse shite. Reagan repealed an act passed in 1980. None of it had been done yet. He did not "close" anything in the federal govt.

LINK

The Mental Health Systems Act of 1980 (MHSA) was United States legislation signed by President Jimmy Carter which provided grants to community mental health centers. In 1981 President Ronald Reagan, who had made major efforts during his Governorship to reduce funding and enlistment for California mental institutions, pushed a political effort through the U.S. Congress to repeal most of MHSA.[1] The MHSA was considered landmark legislation in mental health care policy.

Awesome. Trap them into their condition. They'll never sober up now.
