The logic is no matter how much you complain nothing will happen regardless if you are in a liberal city or a law&order city. Dealing with small stuff like that just eats up officer's time.

By saying he isn't going to prosecute these crimes, which have a very, very low arrest rate, he frees officers to deal with more serious crimes.

But the chance of me being a victim of one of these petty crimes is much greater than a serious one. I’m not really concerned with murders across town or meth out in bfe.

That’s a low bar..Giuliani did a pretty good job in NYC as these small crimes lead to bigger ones, unless you don’t believe that. Taking any penalty off these crimes, whether you actively pursue them or not, sets a bad precedent in my law and order mind. If you’re cool living in it then right on brotha.

Crimes that have a clear victim - theft, burglary, rape, robbery, murder, assault etc - should have stiffer penalties and we should make examples out of the people that commit them. The rest of them I don't really give a shite about.

As much as people shite on Louisiana (no pun), I'd much rather live in a state where people have basic common sense and courtesy than San Fran where homeless are shitting everywhere.

Seriously, that is worse than 3rd world status

I was waiting for someone to bring this up. It was actually William Bratton who was the brains behind the Broken Windows policy. It did include Cracking down on low level crime but he advocated that most of those caught shouldn't be arrested but rather given a court summons to appear on their own recognizance. But he also advocated for strong community policing and developing good relationships with ethnic communities which were as important as the Broken Windows policy. Many cities started using community policing without the Broken Windows element and saw good results. But he also used racial profiling and stop & frisk techniques that infringed on the rights of minorities. You can say so what, but many many innocent people were subjected to his authoritarian tactics more suited to China than a democracy.

I’m not saying so what, and thanks for that history lesson, seriously as I didn’t know about Bratton initiating it, but it’s frankly common sense. I’m equally libertarian as conservative and I’d say if that’s what you want in your neighborhood then by all means let it go; if I was poor and a minority and lived on crap street I’d still prefer rules in my community in order to build pride and self esteem vs putting bars on my windows, but that’s just me. If this was happening in my upscale neighborhood and car jackings were on the rise I’d certainly want penalties for it to ensure consequences for the crime even if it was my neighbors son.
