I used to have a whole schtick about moving out of the country. Worked like a charm every time, although it was never as quick as simply clicking cancel on most things now. I developed a detailed where, when, and why over the years.

Don't live in a place where you need a security system? That would be where I would start

Just put a sign out front and save the money on the installation and the monitoring.

Say “No” to Auto-Renewals
This is very important and I learned the hard way in my younger days when my house was built.
Company that installed system was pretty good. The monitoring is the problem. And when you finally get them to answer it’s too late to cancel(past your renewal date)/give you another number to call (never get through)which handles cancellations/put you on hold for an hr or more hoping you’ll give up/ transfer you to supervisor(probably same person) telling you email of cancellation request will be sent in 2 days for you to fill out and return which never shows up/ lie to you about a verbal 2 year renewal agreement that they have on record by phone which must be paid out before canceling .ect. “It’s a nightmare.”
And the name of company is Brinks. NEVER use them. Month to month only for anyone else. We finally got out of it but took it in the rear by continuing to pay up until 30 days prior to
renewal date the following year(the infamous 30 day window to cancel).

Paging Korkstand, he is the resident expert on this matter

Brother, the experience of cancelling ADT is going to be orders of magnitude more difficult than finding a replacement system
I have a guardian system here. My new subdivision used them to install the systems and I got swayed in to a 3 year contract with them.
System is good. I honestly dont need most of it. But I hate paying for that monitoring. Damned if you do, damned if you dont deal

quote:Its too easy. Make your adt stored payment with your 3rd or so backup credit card and delete the other stored payment options. Then just ask for a new card and number for that card you now have with ADT and don't update the adt and send a written certified letter to them canceling.

Simply call a local company. They will come out and hook up their equipment for like $300 and set up your monitoring depending on what you want. Done

SimpliSafe is a wireless system that you can build yourself. It’s also monitored.

quote:This, except I wouldn't really recommend it for an outdoor camera system that covers the entire house unless you're upgrading to the solar battery chargers for each camera (and that gets pricy pretty quickly) because hauling a ladder around the house to charge camera batteries every six weeks or so would be a PITA.
SimpliSafe
I have a SimpliSafe doorbell camera on the front door and an motion activated exterior camera on the backdoor/carport. There's also a living room cam that sits on the mantle. It has a metal camera cover for privacy, but I can operate it from my phone and check on the dogs and stuff when we're not home. It also activates when the alarm is triggered and has a speaker so the monitoring company can tell the intruder they're being watched. Biggest plus to the SimpliSafe system (and I'm sure other ones have it too in some configuration) is that it has batter and cell backup, meaning that the thieves could cut your power and internet but the base station will still transmit and save recordings to the cloud and they can't turn off the base station without physically destroying it.
For exterior surveillance, however, I went with a wired seven camera system.

Look for a more local option. We have Acadian Total Security in Lafayette area and they sell the alarm and camera system, fire alarms, CO2 sensors and it’s all integrated. Very happy with their service.
Do they have a local call center?
Some farm out monitoring to a 3rd party. And it is a hassle if there is an issue.

Yes. You can talk to local people.
