My mom chose to homeschool because our family was military.

She's also smart as a whip (university of michigan grad) and loves to teach, so that helps.

Saying you fit in at A&M does not help your case.

Well of course there are exceptions. I was talking about the majority that I have come into contact with.

So, if a homeschool kid makes it to college they (statistically) perform better.

Also, those stats only list their academic achievements, which is not the whole college experience. A better measure of what is "better" would be how successful these people are 5-10 years out of college IMO. Also, that comparison between home school vs public school assume all other factors are equal, which isn't the case.

Good thing I never said such It was a statement of fact.

I see you hatin', though

My dad's an Aggie grad, my mom's a Wolverine. Both public school products. My Aggie wife was also public schooled.

Myself and one of my brothers are Aggie grads, I have sisters at Sam Houston State and Baylor currently, and another brother who is going to be attending UTSA in the fall.

Seems like you could fit all of grade school into 2-3 years, what do you do with the rest of the time?

I'm not against home schooling. Your situation is pretty unique, you have to admit that.

Most I have run across have parents who are more ideologic and less realistic when it comes to their ability to offer a well rounded education experience to their kids.

Also, I gotta take my shots at you Aggie weirdos.

There is basically 2 types of home schooling.

1. The type most people think of and unfortunately does exist. You sit at home with your mom and siblings, and basically learn however much your mom knows, and act like a scared deer when you meet new people. These kids usually end up at a Bob Jones college or something similar.

2. You then have the type that has a group organization. There are some that have several hundred kids in them. They meet several times a week for small classes taught by retired teachers, or someone who works in the field. These kids are all tested every year by the same standards as public schools kids. They also do field trips, have organized sports, and even have full graduations. These are the kids that typically graduate early, and will excel at nearly any major college, both academically and socially.

Hopefully as time goes on, there will be less and less of the first kind, as they are truly hurting their kids most of the time.

The dude across the hall in the dorms from me had been homeschooled. The kicked him out when they found him shitting in the shower after they had warned him twice already

Meh, homeschool parents run the gamut of ideological and intelligence backgrounds. I've seen some pretty varied strains, as my folks would get involved in the homeschool groups wherever the military moved us.

In my experience, it's not really accurate to make sweeping generalizations about the homeschool community any more than it is to do the same with public/private schoolers.

Except when it comes to money, I guess. That's a barrier to entry for for private school, as a matter of course

But the socially awkward stereotype gets pretty damn tiresome. It's lazy, but I guess that's how most narratives stick.

I'd think most would come out ahead with wife working and paying private school than staying home teaching kids

Sounds like he would have had problems no matter how he was schooled.

I had a religious nutcase get kicked out of my freshman business math class at A&M for being a constant disturbance. He wasn't homeschooled.

I mean, if it gets into swapping anecdotes, there are plenty of gems no matter the educational background (hello, Florida )

Being homeschooled doesn't mean one is doomed to being socially awkward. Also, I find it pretty amusing that if a person is socially awkward and was public/private schooled, no one blames it on their school matriculation

Thank you. There are facepalming posts in this thread galore. I was raised in a lower/middle class household where I went through public school and my sister (6 years younger) started homeschooling in the second grade. She had a digestive disorder that caused her belly to expand and she was teased mercilessly for it, so my mom pulled her out. She eventually got over it, but didn't care to go back to public school because she had already made friends witj other homeschooled kids. Plus, she kept the friends she had made in public school in addition to kids she met dancing, girl scouts, and through other extracurricular activities outside of the educational setting.

Are there socially awkward homeschooled kids? Yes. Are there socially awkward public/public school kids? shite yea. We had em all over the place. One kid used to speed walk around the building during lunch while staring at the ground. People who cover homeschoolers woth a blanket statement are ignorant and have had experiences with a limited population.

I got invited to the homeschoolers sadie hawkins dance way back when and the chaperones made sure everyone was a bible length apart when dancing to "leave room for Jesus"

Hell, I wouldn't send my son to a school where he had the same teacher for 8-10 years, no matter if she/he was an MIT PhD or not. Figuring out new teachers' expectations and testing style is part of the experience. Just wait until you get to college and have a teacher you can't understand or read their lips.

All the home schoolers that I've seen have been poor white religious zealots, with parents trying to keep them from being exposed to the real world. Rarely works out, but I hear Timmy Teepell was homeschooled. He managed to suck $30k per month out of Jindal for a looooong time.
