Home Insulation Comparisons

Are there any sites where they have built similar structures and them insulated them with different techniques to compare their cooling/heating costs?
And while we're at it, what does the board suggest? I'm building a garage with an apartment on top. I'm thinking of doing rolled fiberglass in the garage downstairs and 2 lb spray foam upstairs. (South Louisiana)

Closed cell foam, and insulated concrete forms for the win.
Just make sure foam guys dont frick it up and poison your family because the messed the batch up.

The best bang for the buck is dense packed cellulose for the walls followed by BIBs if you want fiber glass. Blown cellulose for attic and fiberglass are both fine.
Foam can perform great but it is poor at sound limiting and doesn't deliver enough to justify the increased cost.
Rim joists should always be spray foam. Take your pick between open cell and closed cell if you are climate category 3 or lower. If you are 4 or higher you'll want closed cell for sure on the rim joists.
For basements, foam and only foam.

Go to Extension Service example home down the street from Alex Box. The have comparisons of different insulation and building methods.

cum and roadkill work well

Doing 2x6 exterior walls is the cheapest way to get a great r-value.

We went with BIB in exterior 2x6 walls and foam on the roof. I couldn't be happier with the results.

When installing high efficiency insulation in South LA it is critical to get someone that knows how to properly size the heating and cooling system. Too much tonnage and it will not run enough to keep the humidity at a reasonable level.

So were you able to skip all of the fresh air vent stuff by going with this combo?
This is for a room over a garage. The insulation group I spoke to yesterday did wet cellulose instead of BIB's. So would it be crazy to do open cell foam roof, wet cellulose upstairs walls, and then I just roll in some fiberglass in the garage? (Walls are a combination of siding and brick).
