OK, the chicken or the egg??
Most rec leagues have been raped and if you play your kid there he will not get better because of the lack of competition.
Example: I took a kid out of a local rec league who was mowing kids down on the mound, cranking the ball all over the park. His parents come to me after second weekend and say. We can't believe we were so blinded. We thought our kid was scholly bound and now everyone else out here is just as good as him. The kid did work his tail off after seeing his competition so close and he's pitching at a D1 school now.
It is a shame that the travel ball is getting so watered down now but at least it's broken down in divisions.
If you want your kid to improve you have to put him with good coaching and good competition no matter if its rec or travel.
There are actually some cities that do have good rec programs but not many.
All the kids off my travel team are playing in college, a couple went to football and one to basketball.
I won't take the credit, we supplied decent coaching but the real reason they succeeded was their work ethic, athleticism, and facing other competitive kids..

It's hard enough for a 9-10 year old kid to try and throw the ball over the plate.
not on AA and AAA travel teams

I respect your opinion but I think you may be little naive on what the the skill level is between rec teams and travel teams. There are some kids that play both travel on the weekends and rec during the week which is good for some kids but it's just not an option for others. Especially the kids that pitch 4-5 innings on Sundays.

We place too much emphasis these days on feeding the machine to develop "stars" and not enough on drawing kids away from their X-Boxes and onto a diamond.

if those are the rules you wan to play by then keep your kid in the wreck league.
Why don't you play all of the MLB rules? Why does your sissy boy not pitch from 60 feet, 6 inches? Why aren't the bases 90 feet apart?
Do you allow your kid to pitch the full 8 innings a weekend allowed by USSSA rules. Does he do it this weekend, next weekend, and the weekend after? The orthepedic surgeons are making a killing thanks to teams with a roster of 10 kids playing 5 or more games in two days.

I dont make the rules, we just follow them

no because we dont have to. We have enough pitchers to go deep. Our ace didn't pitch until our 5th game this weekend. That was yesterday afternoon and we pulled him after 65 pitches.

65 pitches a weekend is the max we would throw any kid. Maybe later in the season that number will increase but not right now.

we have 13 kids on our roster and we wont play 5 games every weekend.

honestly, based on your work here you're everything wrong with kids sports. Saying "Wreck league" when you're talking about KIDS. F'ing douche.

What do you travel ball guru's think is the main reason for the spike in arm surgeries for kids 15-19 as Dr. James Andrews has talked about?
does it match the rate of increase in boob job and other cosmetic surgeries?

That is great to hear. More teams need to take that attitude. Pitch counts are far more important than innings pitched.

save that for the competitive cheer thread. lol

I think my biggest issue with travel ball is the rules they use.
8-12 year olds leading off and stealing bases does not teach them how to play correctly.
Fake a bunt to entice a walk. Take a lead 1/2 way to second and steal because the pitcher can't throw over without airmailing it and the catcher can't get the ball to second. Steal 3rd on the next pitch. Score on a wild pitch. Repeat.
The leading and stealing after the ball crossed the plate was a much better rules set for young players.
But, brah, how's a coach gonna show off his true Sparky Anderson skills and prove he ain't just a dad "trying to relive your glory years", if you don't let him chess game like that on the bases?
Come on now.

We have one dad that sits in the stands and that's all he does for us. We dont really worry about innings because we have enough pitchers to cover us for an entire weekend.

Seriuously,
I just
If a college coach is conscious of pitching a player on back to back days, shouldn't a youth coach be concerned with pitching kids 2 innings on one day, and then 4 or more on the next day? On top of that, it's not just once, it's several times a month that this process takes place.

That's a great come back from an adult who would talk like that about 8, 9, and 10 year olds. But shouldn't you have on your under armour, bra!
