Obviously, 3 prideless bachelors, probably siblings, maybe not enough experience to avoid the encounter. They got off light.

I like how at first, it's three lions. Then when one of them sees that hippo coming, he thinks-"nope" and heads back to the shoreline he came from. And at the end, he and some other lion are sitting there thinking, "damn, how far downstream do we need to go to cross?"

Albeit very large it appears like the hippo has somewhat of a fish like geometric shape. This may seem obvious but the reason fish can swim so fast is due to their shape.
Our shape and the lion shape produces too much drag due to vortex shedding. Vortex shedding pulls you back as you move forward.
The reason the fish, like tuna, take advantage of vortex shedding is their flipping is in sync with the forward motion of the rear vortex rather than the backward motion of the vortex. I highly suspect the hippo is doing a similar movement through the water to take advantage of the forward motion of the vortex shedding by the bobbing motion as he swims in the video.
