CNN just said the two players took out the referee because he made a racist remark

Good ole CNN

Not shocking in the least. You knew that's the accusation that was going to be made the moment it happened. What I find more interesting is that an assistant coach may have actually encouraged it:

"The students alleged that an assistant coach said (of the targeted umpire), 'That guy needs to pay for cheating us,'

Jail time. They seriously could have broken the guys neck

That's ridiculous. They're high school kids who did some dumb shite.

Charge them with something? Sure. Kick them out of school? Definitely. Jail them? Come on now. We don't need to jail everyone for everything.

ETA:

Just give them a suspended sentence and make them do community service until they are 30 years old and have calloused hands.

So did they make up the racial slur thing to defend their actions or did the ref actually say it?

Either way they are dead wrong in their actions no matter how bad the calls were before hand.

any coach should be fired that had anything to do with that.

kids shouldn't be allowed to play another down

You know they fricking made it up. Its the universal Get-Out-Of-Jail-Free card these days.

I'm sure the ref made calls against them (like ejecting their starting QB), but I seriously doubt a 14 year HS ref veteran made a racist comment to players. He said he's suing for slander and libel already.

The investigation and reports from the players said the coach told the players to hit the referee for "cheating" them. The racial crap isn't holding water from the coach.

The question is if he told them to tackle the ref. Or if they came up with that on their own.

I'd say jail for premeditated violent assault is fairly reasonable.

I'd say they were minors in a sporting event encouraged by their coach and putting them in jail isn't going to do a damn thing but ruin their lives.

Jail is America's answer for everything and its fricking stupid.

Make them do 500 hours of community service or something. At least that would help the community.

I agree that jail isn't the answer for everything.

Forced labor and public shaming seem apt. maybe let the ref beat the shite out of them.

Forced labor

This should be what we do for most crimes IMO. Our country's infrastructure could use the help of free labor. Just regulate it to avoid human rights violations.

I don't know what's worse, the slur card or the they're just kids card. The kid from Wisconsin who actually had protective equipment on, got up and then tried to play for Alabama...Eric LeGrand will never walk again...These kids physically attacked a man, from behind, wearing equipment that could of possibly killed or severely injured him. If they're really innocent little angels then jail will scare the hell out of them and change their life path for the better. A slap on the wrist will result in high fives. That's what's wrong with this country, we are more worried about criminal rights than victim rights

Well said but the one thing in these cases is the race card that seems to used to the extreme by certain networks. I agree two perpetrators attacked a innocent man from behind period. Even if slur was used these perpetrators and coach need to be charged.

Its not criminal rights I'm worried about. Its making them worse for society in the long run.

17 year old kids do some dumb shite. Make them pay by making them work on community projects for the next decade instead of throwing them in jail on the taxpayers dime.

I can agree with your punishment if they were told to hurt the official by a coach. If they took it amongst themselves to get their racial slur "revenge" then send them to jail. This man could have easily been killed or paralyzed.

I think the best choice would be to counsel them and not hurt anyone's feelings. Followed by free i- phones and reparations going back 8 generations. On second thought. Start by firing the head coach and the assistant coach. expel both players- arrest them- and have them suffer the consequences. either way, their futures look pretty dim. If they have this little self control and judgement at this age......

For what it's worth, I personally heard a referee repeatedly use a racial slur in a high school game in Arkansas one time. On the following Monday we called the state athletic association.... they didn't even want to listen to the complaint. I don't know if this dude said anything or not but the actions of the kids and the alleged actions of the coach are inexcusable.
