Shouldn't we be thankful for this?

Do you people want a catastrophic event?

Because you seem to be hating people for taking measures to prevent one.

I think you have this backwards.
We didn't have these extreme measures for whats o far are objectively worse situations, and none of them turned into catastrophic events. Therefore, why are we all freaking out about this one?

Man it's really difficult to discuss stuff with the intentionally dishonest.
SARS was an epidemiological shot over the bow. If you don't think people in the profession look back at SARS and go "whew, that was close" then you're nuts.
We didn't shut everything down because we had 27 cases. Canada had a couple hundred with a 17% death rate.
Swine Flu's mortality rate was far lower, as you know. It also wasn't a non-event. Anyone who worked in an ICU in 2009 will vividly remember seeing 20-somethings struggle and sometimes die of it.

No. What we are saying is this disease is being hysterically hyped up now for what every reason and will end up being less of a medical
Issue than those
Well it's already worse than SARS
And if less than 12,000 people die from COVID, that would be a good thing, no?

Like magically? Or because we're taking steps to ensure that it is?

The only answer that would make sense is that they know more about this virus and are withholding info. The response otherwise makes no sense

The nature of the virus and the steps being taken

Do any of you realize that no one under the age of 80 has died from this? Not using this as an excuse to not care about it, but this virus hasn't killed a non elderly person yet, on the entire planet. See below, the confirmed cases where someone died only applies to those over 80, as they are the only age group that has died from this.
This is blatantly false.

I guess I just don't understand the continued assuredness of people who don't do this for a living telling everyone in the industry, everyone on the ground in Italy and China, etc. that what we're doing (echoing almost everywhere else) is overkill and politically tinged to hurt the President.
I mean, at this point the President is making prime time addresses. Whatever he's hearing has convinced him, and I'm not sure why normal dudes like me are still so convinced that this is an overreaction.

I am not a genie, but honestly, if a genie could tell me these current measures saved 20,000 lives I would say we went way overboard
For our actions to make logical sense, it would need to be something that saved 100s of thousands of lives/ prevented 1-2 million extra hospitalizations

Nobody looks back at those events as catastrophic
People are more easily manipulated today even vs the H1N1 10 years ago. They desperately want the illusion of safety and security.

We know that it is easily spreadable and has a higher mortality rate than the 2009 Swine Flu which killed 12,000 people in the US
Just that should tell you that maybe we should take more precautions than we did in 2009?
Seems obvious to me

Not sure you'll get agreement that what is happening today is better.

I take no issue whatsoever with someone going "man, I know this is dangerous but I'm just not sure all of this is going to help or is really needed. I don't know for sure, but it seems kind of reactionary."
In many ways I'm in that boat.
But I am baffled by those who are absolutely convinced they're correct, and frustrated by those who continue to use inapplicable/bad info to make arguments on that basis.

I don't even know if I agree with it
but then again, I'm not an expert on these things, so

I don't believe this is true.
I think children just don't show symptons.
