Of course the Marines are the lowest paid special forces. Always doing more with less.......

That’s why so many do “private” work......
Sometimes the “private” work starts, while still serving..... for others, after getting out....
BTW, no one starts out doing things, at this elite level, for the money....... Some eventually give in to thoughts

A lot of them probably make decent money doing stuff they enjoy when they leave
That said, I do wonder how these guys straight faced say "yeah I mean my time in DEVGRU was great but it probably wasn't as rewarding as doing 40 weekend classes a year training fat guys with LARP gear how to look cool while dying in a gun fight"

you're looking at around $2250-$2500 a month after 20 yrs as an average enlisted guy
For the rest of your life? After 20 years in the service, so starting in your early/mid forties, and this is for an enlisted guy with no outside education? Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Add in reenlistment bonuses. 10 years EOD (who at least in the AF aren't considered special forces) got $80k reenlistment bonuses. The first thing their wives would do was get a boob job.

Yeah, the housing allowance is huge.

Plus these guys don't pay federal a lot of the time. You only have to step foot in a tax free zone once a month to be tax free all month.

You can move through the ranks fast if your in a short handed field. When I was enlisted (USCG Quartermaster), I made E6 in 4 years, E7 in 9.5 years, Warrant2 at 15 years and retired Warrant 4 at 30 years. The CG never adopted W5. Pension is 5,700 month take home. With extra pay my active duty net was over 4K every two weeks. Definitely nice for a high school graduate. The health/dental insurance for me and the wife is a huge cherry on top.

Yeah, people make e4 in under two all the time in the army but that's looking at such a brief time period very early in a career and seems odd to use that as the example. An e6 at 8 years or something like that just seems closer to the norm.

No, a large percentage of us have Bachelor's and all of us have at least an Associate's in order to make it to the E-8 or E-9 level. My guess would be that around 70% of E-7s have their Associate's, at least in the USAF.

Agree on all that. I knew some really sharp guys that retired Air Force at the E6/7 level at 20. My father was Army Airborne during Nam. He made E7 in 8 years. Retired E8 with 24 years lol. He didn’t have to waste money on tailoring.
