Yeah, but having an hour of daylight in the evening is a lot more useful than in the morning for most people. I can't really do anything useful with an hour of daylight before work. But an extra hour of daylight in the afternoon means I can mow the yard and do outdoor upkeep on weekdays and be able to keep weekends free for recreational activities instead of housework.

For the kids, it means they actually would have time to play outside after school in the winter instead of it being dark already by the time they finish homework.

Our start time at work is 6 AM, I like seeing day break around then. I do not need the "extra" hour of daylight in the evening> During the summer getting dark near 9 PM is hard to get used to. I have plenty of time to get home and tend to things without that "extra" hour.

If we pick one I would rather DST year round. Our ancestors woke up in the dark to hunt, I think I could manage. Also, I wouldn't mind a dim commute to work so my eyes can adjust gradually. I would much rather have daylight later in the day to do stuff outside after work and not spend a huge portion of my time in darkness. In Europe the sun doesn't go down in the summers until like 9 PM and it was pretty nice, they just seem to get going an hour later than we do but things stay open much later. However, the OT is full of cranky 40+ year olds so I am not surprised at all that everyone prefers early sunrise and sunset.

A correlation may be found in the fact that a majority of the US population is overweight or obese.
Seems backwards. Having less daylight in the evening means less time for outdoor activities and more time for sitting on the sofa with a bag of chips watching trashy reality TV.

By 8 PM every night, I'm headed for bed.

If we switched to standard time, someone who liked to stay up doing acitvies after work would likely move away from an area where the latest sunset of the year was before 8 PM.

I don't see why that's any crazier than someone moving away from somewhere because they don't like the politics of the state.

Not if they have kids to feed and get ready for school. Plus I don't think my neighbors would appreciate hearing my lawn mower at 6am. You can still have an early morning jog around the neighborhood whether or not the sun is up yet though.

How about explaining why its crazier rather than a laughing emoji?

I don't have kids. I have a degree where I can find work anywhere I want. My wife works remotely. Moving is nothing and, generally, I don't like the sun at night. I'd rather it get lighter earlier in the day.

Would you laugh at someone who moved away from somewhere where the sun was shining until 10:30 at night because that was too late? Where is the cutoff? I'm not asking for a 3 PM sunset here. I'd like to be in an area where the sun isn't backlogged by an hour.

Honestly, I don't give a shite which one we stick with, but it's stupid AF to change our clocks at any point during the year.

The big push is to remain on DST year round. Why?

I can't help you. Standard time would be better for sleep hygiene and, generally all around. In a modern world with electric lights, I can't understand why the DST lobby is so much stronger. I'll take it over switching twice a year (which is even dumber than DST), but it seems like an emotion reaction to a bad thing (again, the switching) rather than a rational, logical, optimal solution.

We should stay on standard time because standard time is actually true.

At "noon" on daylight savings, the sun isn't actually at noon. It's an hour away from noon.

I admit that due to the way timezones work, clock noon isn't literal, solar noon for most of the time zone. There is some leeway. But at least it's an attempt to be mostly accurate. DST is wrong on purpose.

I think the DST cohort is just louder proportional to their pull. The poll I saw was a 10-15% gap in the preference of DST over standard. If you went by people who spoke about it and posted online, you'd think it was more like an 80/20 split.

Again, DST folks think I'm attacking their values. I just don't want it. If we all agree to move that way, so be it. I'd just like a little more nuanced discussion instead of "People who don't want DST are miserable pricks, frick them!"
