No but a correct comparison would be Englandman and Irelandman and those definitely sound like slurs.

Oriental is no longer appropriate.

The only people I hear using that term today are over-60 country folk. They sound like my grandma saying colored or negro and thinking she was being polite.

The former is always to be negatively characterized ("oppressive Englishman", "exploitive Englishman"), NEVER should it be used in a positive light or sense.

The latter is more tricky. If a human of Irish extraction is/was in a position of power, then the same rules apply to "Irishman" as to the term "Englishman". If the Gael folk happens to be the exploitee, then the term "Irishman" is acceptable. Context is everything.

Thoughtspeak is here. Careful how you tread.

Since he is buried with the guy that went nuts and they died on the same day, it is very possible that he is that specific Chinaman.

You had to be hoping someone didn't get the reference so you could follow up with that picture of Walter.

Cool story, OP.

This thread is very telling about how PC we've become as a society. The OP brings up an interesting question. But instead of wondering about the question at hand, people are hung up on the word used to describe the person involved.

Well, it is humorous that "Chinaman" was the only descriptor on his grave.

So it seems the Maniac died the same day.. Newspaper article says it happened on the 11th, tombstone says 13th..did someone else kill Chinaman??

It may be that the death of a Chinese person in 1907 was not worthy of the news.
Sort of like in Huckaberry Finn story when the aunt was asked if anyone on a tugboat sinking was injured or killed.....the answer was.."No". Then she said a negro died.

I prefer Oriental. Asia is so huge and has such a disparity of phenotypes that Asian is practically useless as a descriptor.

No , Oriental may only be applied to an item(like a rug, fan, dress, etc.) not a person. Asian is appropriate.

No one said anything about the article's use of the term "maniac". Is maniac offensive nowadays?

Of course not, they are usually white and thus they can be (and are generally assumed to be) racist but referring to them canNOT be racist because of their privilege. However, if they are of color then the term would obviously be racist hence terms like Black Irish to distinguish ones without privilege from the pale devil oppressors.

So going with this logic does this mean it is impossible for a white person to be a racist in a central African country?
