Would you have a problem giving us his name?

You can get a copy of his DD-214 from Army Records. It is all on-line. I am a Marine, not sure how the Army handles it, but you can get the DD-214 and it will have everything on it. Your GrandPa was a warrior. Good Luck!

Good luck. My great grandpa is still alive, WWII vet. He’s 97 and can still recall every detail from his time in the service

Nope, totally understandable

Have you recorded any of his war experiences on film? I suggest you do.

That's awesome, record him, write it down, do something so you have that information when he's gone.
Unfortunately my grandfather was not very open about his time. I know he went through hell so no judgement.
I know he got frostbite in France, watched his friend get gunned down in the woods, hid behind a tree unarmed while a dozen German troops walked right past him. He also spoke German fluently and I am guessing that if he really did liberate a concentration camp being a German speaker he had to hear some pretty horrible stories.
I don't blame him for not wanting to talk about it

I have not but that’s something I will certainly do in the near future. He’s a pretty incredible guy

I found a form called an SF-180. Since I am not next of kin I need to fill it out and file a request for his DD-214. I have to mail it in, I just filled it out and am sending it in, hopefully I don't get denied...
Apparently only next of kin can request these filed unless he's been discharged for 62+ years, luckily he has

I can tell you for sure your dad wasn’t in the 77th. division if he was in Europe. If you’re wanting to find out what campaigns he fought in you’ll need to know at least his division.

The Corps of Engineers: the War against Germany
Engineer Combat Battalions
The first link is a pdf of a US army publication. The second link is the Wikipedia page for US Army Combat Engineer Battalions.
Good luck!

As someone mentioned above go to fold3 (a great genealogical web site). Newspapers.com May be an option as well. Do the free trial and search around.

Reading your posts it sounds like he may have been in the 87th infantry
Not 77th but that could be some confusion on your uncles’ parts.
87th was in France, battle of the bulge and into Germany.
ETA Do you have any of his patches/uniforms? Would be easier to find the unit that way. 87th was a yellow acorn on a blue background I believe.

Start with your information request of service records through Archives in St. Louis I think. That's how I got all of my information. It sometimes is never clear who you were attached to back then. And they weren't fabulous with records but you'll get something back.

That makes sense thanks!
I don't but they probably do, I need to go talk to them

So I went to Fold3 and made a free trial account. I found his enlistment card as well as his fathers WWI draft card AND his fathers WWII "Old Man's Draft" card!
Awesome

Looks like the 87th wasn't in Normandy though so I don't think that is his unit
