For anyone interested, it appears this poster is spamming the board.

Read his thread on the Poli Board ( LINK ) and see SFP's article why this type of "public-private partnership" backfires and ends up costing local taxpayers big dollars.

I haven't read the thread here on the O-T so maybe this has been answered: who do you work for?

A progressive thing happening in BR? Pigs will fly before something constructive like this will be agreed upon.

The city of Tuscaloosa is doing something similar to this. They are starting on the West End and will expand it later. The city of Tuscaloosa does have an abundance of cash right now though.

Wouldn't this undermine the important monopoly that Cox has worked so hard to create and protect? Are we really willing to throw that away just for cheaper and faster internet? Not in my Baton Rouge, not today mister!

Reason did a study on this very issue

quote:

Because they assume broadband is an infrastructure business, they believe the model will follow the classic utility: high upfront construction costs, followed by high yield revenues that pay back the investment, while the installed plant can be routinely maintained as it depreciates on a long schedule. As with a classic utility, customer acquisition costs are believed to be low and incremental.

The shock comes when they learn, usually within two years of start-up, that technology cycles in broadband are short. Equipment can’t be “maintained” over a decade; it often has to be upgraded or replaced every two to three years. An even bigger shock comes when cities discover how much they must spend year-to-year to build and maintain viable market share. This is when municipalities realize that it’s not the speed of its Internet connections, but the quality, breadth and competitiveness of its cable TV service that drives revenues.

quote:

For all the enthusiasm about municipal broadband, one fact remains: A great majority of systems fail. Those that survive end up falling short of their promised goals of lower prices, better service and ubiquity. One high-profile project after another—Ashland, Oregon; Provo, Utah; Tacoma, Washington—have leveraged their taxpayer funding, only to fall short of goals and end up facing a mountain of debt.

Russian did we discuss how this poster is almost certainly a plant?

It's a board game, but also control of a commodity or service (per my Google search). If I wanted to find a more competitive rate for cable internet in Baton Rouge, I couldn't find a competitor against Cox. I guess this doesn't qualify?

Needed this in this thread just in case nobody made it over to politalk

quote:

ATT has ALREADY installed THEIR fiber in all Baton Rouge servitudes. They have been negotiating with the city government on approval to extend from servitudes to homes/businesses. The corrupt politicians have been delaying these negotiations. Now we see why. The only reason we don't have fiber yesterday is because corrupt politicians have been scheming to find a way to line their pockets.

I saw it in the Poli Board thread.

He's gotta be someone who gets paid if this "plan" passes. Maybe the engineering consultant who would get the contract for developing the plan??

Have you RA'd? I haven't.

My bad, I didn't realize posting on two relevant boards was frowned upon. Will have the admins delete one of the posts.

I work in the food service industry.

I have Cox but I can also use DirectTV, AT&T, Verizon, CenturyLink and a host of smaller ISP's if I want to.

Maybe those providers aren't in your area but they are in my area of Baton Rouge.

South Baton Rouge not far from LSU. Not gonna get more specific than that.

What neighborhood do you live in?

And what do you gain if taxpayers pick up the tab for this project?

See my previous posts. No new taxes. In fact, this could become a revenue generator for the city.

I have to call bullshite. Whether it's the city, the parish or the state, I have not seen a proposal to deal with a single significant problem or opportunity that did not first involve more "revenue" from taxpayers. And this fits their formula to a T. Find some wonderful program that no one should object to and tack another tax onto the citizens to pay for it. I wonder if this one will produce eye-popping results like the CATS tax did.

If this is surefire revenue generator for the city, then the need for new revenue better not even be mentioned. And if it does generate new revenue without taxes, then maybe that revenue can be used to fund the city's needs and we can get a property tax cut. (Yeah, right)

As someone that lives in EBRP I like the idea.
At this time I have to say we cannot afford it.
The city parish cannot afford to fix roads, bridges, clean ditches, and provide basic services.
The city has way too many taxes now for failed programs CATS, Brec wants money for a zoo while the park in my area was promised a splash pad and gymn we will never see. Council on aging wants to put a tax on the ballet.

At this time we have enough taxes while ditches need cleaning, grass on right of ways are over grown, sewage system in my area over flows when it rains.

When the city parish can afford to provide all the basic services using our tax dollars efficiently I have to email my councilman and say no!!!

Thanks for bringing this agenda item to my attention.

I just sent an email to my councilman asking him to vote NO on this item.
