Maybe it was awkward bc of girl power and not a race issue.

This. A couple of weeks ago, I stepped aside to allow a 20-something lady to get on the bus ahead of me and she refused. Said something like "I don't need any help." Kind of set me back, but hasn't changed my behavior. By the way, this happened in Seattle, which is probably not too surprising.

she mumbled something like 'thanks' and stared down at the floor as she passed me and when i turned around there were like 3 white people standing in the lobby staring at us who quickly looked away.

You're lucky the lady didn't storm right pass you and give you a dirty look. That's usually what happens when trying to be cordial in this situation.

I swear some of you are suffering from confirmation bias. I can count on one hand the number of people of any color who have done this.

Did you check your Privilege at the door before you opened it?

I interacted with a shite load of black people today and also held the door for one at the gas station. Nothing was awkward or uncomfortable.

I held the door for a black man at a convenience store today and got a similar reaction. He looked at me angrily and then said thanks well after he passed me. I don't get it I am white but grew up in a black neighborhood and have always treated everyone the same. I will continue to do that. They can be as angry as they want. I am not going to change my behavior to be a hater

I stopped by my friend's office today while I was in the neighborhood. It was a good visit. Oh yeah, and he's black.

What is stranger, I saw two black guys in my barber shop this morning. One was really loud and cutting up and talking politics. He was pissed someone keeps stealing the Trump signs out of his yard.

I held a door for an elderly black couple this morning and they both looked at me and said "thank you young man."
