Yes, when you're doing something that you're not supposed to be doing.

that's what got to me. You're instilling in an impressionable young mind that police are there to do you harm.
The kid is touching things in the store that he isn't going to buy. The parent is saying that what he's doing is wrong and if he continues to do wrong he will go to jail. How does that equate to police doing him harm?
Seems to me the lesson is if you do wrong, police will take you to jail. If the kid doesn't do wrong, he doesn't have a reason to worry about police. As far as the kid growing up to fear police, don't know how you got there.

My parents used to tell me they were going to drop me off at DCI when I was little and acting up as we used to drive by it all the time. I don't see a problem.

Right before my son turned 2, he touched the cable box after I told him not to very sternly. Called the cops and had them cuff him in the back of the squad car. Since then, he's got a healthy fear of his dad doing some ridiculous shite like that. Totally worth it.

I saw this awhile back with a cop behind said mom in line. Mom was telling her young son that the police man was going to arrest him if he didn't start acting right. The boy was visibly scared. They cop had to repeatedly tell the kid he wasn't going to arrest him. Every time the mom would immediately contradict him. Black mom, black cop fwiw. I felt as bad for the cop as i did for the kid.

My mom threatened us with everything from the police to shipping us to Vietnam.

you dont teach him by calling the cops, you discipline him when he tries to do wrong in the store!

WE all know he's right, including you. But it doesn't fit your narrative to admit it.

I can't tell you how many calls I got when I worked in a PLA school for someone to "come get" their 11-12 year old who is refusing to go to school.
