I just read that 40% of Hawaii is Asian. Native Hawaiians aren’t even more populous than whites. How is that possible? I also had no idea so many Asians immigrated to Hawaii.

Airplanes and boats, likely.

That seems about right for Oahu. Oahu has a Chinatown
Not sure about the other islands though.

6 Very large military bases here help add to that.

Read Michener's Hawaii. It goes in depth from Pre History to modern day. Great read that will answer your questions completely. His Alaska is another must read.

Great book. I also read Alaska and Texas. Some of my favorite re-reads.

My first time in Hawaii, I was surprised by the amount of fat locals there were. Like Louisiana fat.

A haole (pronounced "howlie") is a foreigner/non-local. Mostly it's used on surf breaks, but it does get around a bit. I was out in Hawaii many, many years ago surfing with one of our project managers from our company here near Atlanta. Our young PM was from Hawaii and was getting me to the good breaks. I got called "haole" a few times, but it mellowed a bit when they saw I was with one of theirs. They absolutely brutalized another guy with the epithet. Might as well have been calling him the "N"-word. Turned out that the other guy taking the abuse was Kelly Slater, best surfer in the world. In the end, he gained their respect (to put it mildly) and was welcomed into the group.
