We got Da Spicy all the way up in north Texas. You don’t need NO or Louisiana. I used to love to visit but honestly might never go back.

I lost my home and everything in it during Hurricane Laura last year. Family here and my job only things kept me from leaving and I was born and raised here. But as others have said its a big country and lots of nicer places to live

New Orleans is more severe on that dimension than many other places so it’s just a fact of life if you want to live in Southern LA.
Yeah, but you get fair warning for our disasters. I have never sat through a hurricane. I leave, and go on vacation.

Great thread! I’m really surprised by the lack of dissent. Born and raised in NOLA and left in 2001 after LSU. I’ve lived in Houston and now Jacksonville, FL since 2003. Both cities are great and wonderful places to live. I miss family, friends, and the state of Louisiana dearly, but I’m glad I don’t live there anymore. I visit as often as I can, but I also find that I’m happy when on the way back to Florida.

Johnson City TN is quite the sweet spot according to a friend and his family that use to live down here. I’ve been there, all of LA is a dump in comparison.

I was 22, a job took me out of NOLA to Houston. At first, I was homesick as all hell, just wanted to go back to my old stomping grounds. But then years became decades away from NOLA, I visited less & less. I realized I was so lucky to get away and lead a more fulfilling life. Don't get me wrong- I enjoyed growing up and being schooled in NOLA/Jefferson/Metarie, but NOLA has been in decline for decades and nothing can save it...nothing! Thanks for the memories...

All the dissenters are either pulling sheetrock or on AT&T!

Houston is NOT somewhere I'd want to live and I agree NO and most of La sucks.

I keep trying to leave but nowhere else but Houston will take me, and that’s a sideways move at best.

My bail out plan was the north shore but that place is getting fricked almost worse than the city.
It’s “y’all’s” fault. You city fricks keep wanting to bail out up here instead of policing your own parish and then bring that same bullshite attitude and nonsense with you. The northshore is full, please try again never.

Houston is a lateral move from Sorrento?

I had a blast while living in Houston from 2001-2003. Granted I was single and fresh out of college, and I lived inside the loop to avoid daily traffic problems.

I moved to Chicago and been here 3 years after graduating college in the midwest... I'm mid twenties and while I really like the big city and its walkability, cute neighborhoods, and countless things to do, the winters suck and I really miss family back on the northshore. While I know tens of people from college here, I have several siblings and countless friends/nieghbors from HS still in LA.
Granted, I've never lived as an adult in NOLA but I think it would be nice, although being 100% dependent on a car would be a change (don't own one now). I'm torn between starting to set down roots and settle down here or move back to LA and start there. Im nervous I'll move back and realize nostalgia was clouding my judgement.
Not sure I'm really giving Chicago / Illinois a fair chance. Oh well, we'll see.

It’s nice of you don’t have kids & the means
Lot of shite to deal with but it’s worth it most of the time

I feel ya... If I could sell my business and convince my kids to leave I'd be out tomorrow...

Did the opposite as you. Grew up in Nola and lived there until my early 40s. My wife and I had been thinking for some time of making a change and fell in love with Chicago so we moved in 2019. We got a lot of questions from people, but felt it was the right decision for us for many reasons.
After two years here, there is no amount of money that I would take to ever go back. I’m proud of where I am from, but there are way too many downsides, in my opinion.
And personally, after living through Katrina and losing everything, plus evacuating for countless other storms, I will take the winter any day over the summers down south and hurricane season.

The most common sentiment I hear from people that left.
1. Missed it hard at first.
2. Realized how bad it really was, and now loves ABC city they're living in so much more.
3. Miss friends and family.
4. Ok to visit for a few days but NEVER going back.

Louisiana sucks (particularly the urban centers). Leave if you can.
That said, there are natural disaster potentials anywhere you live. Earthquakes, forest fires, floods, mudslides, blizzards, and of course democrats.

I say that tongue in cheek but what my neighbors and I do for each other right now leaves imprints on us.
