I know a guy who lost everything he owned and almost went to jail. Owned an insurance company that specialized in high risk policies and was knocking down major bucks. He always had a gambling problem, but after a hip replacement he also developed a hydrocodone addiction. I'm talking a handful in the morning type problem.
Before to long he got so far in debt he was gambling with his customers premium payments and losing them. One day a bunch of his customers are notified that their insurance has been cancelled, and then shortly thereafter investigators show up to check him out.
Due to being in such rough shape he avoided jail, but amazingly his wife stuck by his side. They live in a low income apartment and he does odd jobs and gets disability due to his hip problem. His wife does interior decorating.
Good thing out of all of it is dude hit rock bottom, kicked his gambling habit, hydro habit, and smoking habit, but lost everything he owned.

Yes. And after he lost, he pawned a car he borrowed, robbed a bank, and stole a truck to go back to the casino. Got caught, did time, died a couple years back. True story. He was an acquaintance of my grandfather's.

My best friend (died too young) got in so deep with his "man" he was forced into collections to work off his debt. Even later in life he struggled with impulse gambling.

My aunt went through her whole retirement and my uncles retirement and had to file for bankruptcy.
She lost.

I've met people in real life that have lost their entire lives gambling. House, wife, kids,...
How did he gamble away his wife and kids!? More importantly, if he had won were they gonna give him a hotter wife?

i usually win. i gamble all the time. i will play 10dollar scratch offs and win a 100 every other month. and i play 1 and 5dollar slots and win a good amount. i hit for 1500 in august on a 5 dollar machine. i went 2 nights ago and hit 100 on 2 dollars. and hit the craps and won 100.

My FIL has a doctorate in actuarial mathematics, the science of odds and probabilities. He completely understands craps, and it's fun to watch him play and to just bet alongside him. The wins are nicely incremental and the losses small. He never bets huge, doesn't call attention to himself, and we each always walk away with an extra $2k - $3k in our pockets in a little over an hour. He'll abruptly call it quits, while greedy me will want to continue, but he'll just say, "time to get off the table" and I trust him on that.

Guys who really win at casinos don't talk about it much.

No one ever seems to drive less than 275 with a three wood either.

It's like an old boss of mine once said: "I won $600 at the track on Saturday." What he didn't say was, "But I lost $650."

went to a ga meeting with my pappy in nola back in the day. this was before social media..very interesting and scary listening to how some of these gamblers had totally ruined their lives. my pappy was a lightweight gambler compared to these folks, but even so he made our lives miserable, especially my wonderful mother.
the gamblers said sunday was their favorite day of the week because mail didn't run that day.

sorry for your losses. I just don't get the appeal of gambling in any form.
