Yet another reason a manual transmission and e brake are superior.

Yes, 20 years ago i bought a 1981 Jeep CJ-7. Had just driven away from a shop where I had the floorpans replaced, and when I got to the stop sign to turn onto the highway I stepped on the brake pedal and it went to the floor and stayed there. I was able to gear down and drive into a shallow ditch to stop. Master cylinder was bone dry. From that day till I sold it a decade later I always had a gallon of brake fluid in the back.

Yep. Just gotten my DL. Had a camp on D’arbonne and it was very hilly getting to it. Dad drove there and put the parking brake on. Me and a friend left later to run to Walmart. I could tell something was wrong but didn’t know what it was. Get to the main road and noticed the brake light was on. Turned it off and it was good to go. Get going 60 or so and come to a t intersection. Hit the brakes and nothing happened. Panicked and put it in park and we went for a ride. Skidded through the intersection, off the road, and back on the road. Very lucky no cars were coming or that I didn’t barrel off into some trees.

Twice. 1st time brake line blew out. Dealership mechanic twisted the left front line when they replaced them before i left with the truck. Luckily was on a long straight stretch that i could just coast to a stop after missing my turn.
2nd time a caliper blew apart, but i was in the parking lot at the plant so no real excitement.

When driving in snow my brakes locked up once. It all ended fine, it was later, road empty, just went on my way.

This seems very rare

It is in fact, very rare because it is damn near impossible for it to happen on modern vehicles. The master cylinder has a built-in backup cylinder in case a seal blows. As a result, the only thing that could happen is one of the steel brake lines blow.

Then, after all of that redundancy, the emergency brake is a completely separate manual system operated by cables.

So you would have to have three simultaneous failures before you would have absolutely no brakes.

They cant fail as long as you have a valid brake tag.

I’ve had brakes start smoking twice. Both times while driving a minivan with the family years ago. Once was driving down a steep mountain in Colorado and the other driving down Mauna Kea in Hawaii (about 14,000 feet tall). I wasn’t driving from the peak in Hawaii, but the road was steeper than I expected. I was taking an alternative route back and it was night, which is extremely dark in Hawaii.

Same here. Didn’t totally lose them, just the master cylinder, but noteworthy to 14 year old me on a public road with no drivers license. Ours was a ‘71 GMC.
