Seems like most of you are missing what this guy said in his OP. Everybody has dreams where they think it’s real while it’s happening and also shortly after you wake up. But to wake up and 5-10 minutes later go act upon that dream because you still think it’s real is weird.

All the time when I take melatonin

I use to read a lot of books about Civil War and WW2 battles and would have vivid dreams about them, particularly after I read "Voices of D-Day."

I had a dream once where someone was knocking on my front door in the middle of the night. I got up and the alarm clock read 3:32. I remember thinking “who in the hell is that” and grabbed my gun and answered the front door. When I opened it, a car peeled out in front of my house and started racing down the street. I woke up after it turned the corner. I sat up and my alarm clock (in real time) read 3:33.

Dreamt I woke up during the 2016 flood and put my foot down on the floor out of the bed. It went into water and I freaked out that my house had flooded. Screamed and then woke up to a dry house.

Lately I've had dreams where I encounter some of my former pets that died years ago. What's strange is I seem to know they are dead and gone but I still enjoy them in the dream. It's like my brain doesn't understand that it is not possible to pet or play with an animal that died 10 years ago and that prevents me from realizing it is just a dream.

I bicycle kicked the frick out of my gf last night because I was dreaming that a bunch of rapid raccoons were fighting in the bed and I was trying to get them out.

All you people need to do is search for “Lucid Dreaming” and most of your questions will be answered.
Lucid dreaming is common overall but rather rare on an individual basis. Enjoy.

I had some fricked up dreams at the beginning of the pandemic. Read that it was common occurrence because a lot of people weren’t sleeping well.
Had a dream a few months ago where I sat down at a bar and tried to talk the group next to me. They refused to look over until finally one of them looked at me and said “Listen, we’re not supposed to talk to you since this is your dream or else we will get in big trouble. I looked around and everyone in the bar was staring at me. Then I immediately woke up.

I have a ton of post apocalyptic dreams (yes I take melatonin). I’m always protecting some random woman or kid from zombies or Mad Max type freaks. It feels super real but I just write it off as my mind putting me in movie or video game situations I’ve seen.

I’ve woken up damn relieved after realizing that I didn’t commit the crime, or that I didn’t flunk the test.
It's amazing how many folks have this same recurring dream about taking that test and you haven't been to the class all semester. Almost every time I relate this dream the folks I relate this to said they had the exact same one.

Friend of mine dreamed a helicopter was attacking him and he shot at it.
When he woke up, his ceiling fan had a hole in one blade. He always kept a handgun on his night stand, and it was missing one round

I have had dreams that disturbed me all day, usually about someone dying. I will wonder if it’s real at first, and then worry it’s a premonition or something.
