Has this scare revealed the publics horrible sense of proportion?

Yes. After it’s all done, the proportion of response relative to the already existing pandemics will be studied for years.
It may shine a light on other areas that even bigger issues but don’t get coverage.

Well we have people that are terrified of ar15s yet don’t think anything of the fact that more people are killed each year being punched and kicked than all rifle deaths combined.

What I love the most about the public is that it knows way more than every medical expert who went to school for 25 years.

Either way, there are many other causes of death every year in the US that far exceed even worse case scenario projections of C-19

People in their industry of expertise tend to overstate, emotionally, whatever it is they work with. For example, I know many firemen. They overstate the risk of house fires because they see so many of them because that's what they work with. When you look at the numbers, the chances of being injured or dying in a house fire is extremely low.
That's what I mean by losing sense of proportion. So yes, people in specific industries can get tunnel vision. They are constantly inundated in the dangers of whatever it is they work with.

It's that, but so much more. The public's "horrible sense of proportion" is merely one aspect of its general ignorance of all sorts of quantitative concepts.

Exactly and that's why we shouldn't cry wolf here. I understand taking proper precautions, like quarantining the elderly or immunocompromised but to grind the entire world economy to a halt for what amounts to a small percentage of the population who are at risk, is overkill, as far as I'm concerned.

This. The "experts" are usually going to gravitate toward the most catastrophic scenario. They know the science, but are not good at making informed decisions that strike the best balance for society. There are lessons in this for the global warming issue.

Thank you. That was kind of my point.
I have a few family members who like to hyperventilate over everything and I always have to make them look at the bigger picture and assess what their actual personal risk are of being in danger of whatever it is that has them blowing into a paper bag.
I'm toying with the conclusion on these people that they just get a rise out of fear. Mostly bored people with no hobbies who like to get that cortisol rush.
