One problem is that when things like this happen people working on the crisis tend to grandstand to make themselves look good and create a lot of needless things so they can say look at what I did.

Yes and I will give you a great example;
So far this year 13.2 million people have died around the world. That would mean the 14,000 deaths would make up about 0.1% of all the deaths from this year.

Firemen state the risk of house fires because they see them firsthand and understand them better than the public. The reason the risk of you dying in a house fire is low is because the experts that deal with them on a daily basis understand how dangerous they are and have informed the public about how to deal with them. If you had firemen stating nonchalantly that house fires aren't that big of a deal I'd be willing to bet you'd see a relatively dramatic spike in the number of people who die in house fires over time.

My local grocery stores were 100% out of potatoes yesterday. Potatoes.
All other produce was unaffected and they even had full bread and milk aisles, but some people saw others buying up potatoes and probably thought "potatoes are the next TP! We gotta buy some NOW!" and the wave spread. One store runs out and people think there's a run on potatoes happening, so they run to the next store.
This is just anecdotal to the panic as a whole on a macro level, but people are like lemmings.

This highlights two disturbing trends in our country these days.
1. People have lost the ability, or have not been taught the skill of analytical thinking. I blame it on our Headline Driven Society. Neatly presented and easily accessed sensational headlines proliferating social media can drive public opinion. People no longer have the desire or ability to read articles or press releases and make an informed, rational decison. They only read the headlines.
2. Our society suffers from a profound and dangerous distrust of experts. It is why fear-driven fake news stories can spread like wildfire through communities. People wholesale discount experts in a field because it either challenges their perception of the world around them or they lack the education needed to understand a topic. That lack of education is more often by choice than circumstance, as real, accurate information and knowledge is easier to obtain than ever before in our society. However, if we continue discounting the knowledge and advice of experts (in whatever field you wish to insert), and inserting our own flawed beliefs, things will only get worse.

Different people specialize in diff things. Like I may know how to do that doctors taxes, but couldnt do a triple bypass surgery. I may actually know statistics and he knows hearts. But that doesnt mean hes an expert or that im an expert on corona viruses.
