I know and have met some really genuine police officers who are very respected people. These are the cops that I have simpathy for. Because social media has made their lives harder nowadays with a lot of young kids being taught to have caution with cops. When I was a kid, police officers were taught that they were like the disciples of Jesus and that they were all Saints and that we should have total trust in them. Bottom line, there's good and bad cops. And that's about all I got

Agreed. My good friend from high school is a deputy that regularly lets people go for minor drug possession, stops to help anytime he sees someone broken down, and actually makes an effort to help. I've done a few ride alongs with him and we picked up a 12 year old kid that had shoplifted. He talked to the store owner about not pressing charges, the store owner agreed, and instead of taking him to juvenile detention, we went directly to his parents house. I waited in the car with the kid while he talked to his parents. It was agreed that he was going to give the kid a "coming to Jesus" talk in the front yard and allow the parents to take it from there. My friend is pretty intimidating stature-wise, so when he pulled that kid out and blessed him out, that kid was shaking with fear and crying. I think he got the picture. He dropped by their house a few times after that to "check in" with the kid. Ultimately I think the kid probably learned more about authority through that means, regardless of what his parents did afterwards or if he would have just brought him to Juvenile detention.
With all that said, from my personal experience with the other guys on his force, the good to bad ratio is probably 95/5. There were a couple douche bags that had no business having a badge and a gun, but overall, they are a good group of guys.

I've met some good cops and shitty cops. The shitty ones give the good ones a bad name, but just dealing with Baton Rouge, the corrupt assholes outweigh the people just trying to do their job.

No its not. Nobody is denying that there are a-hole cops out there that commit criminal acts. But to lump every single cop into that category is ridiculous. All im saying is that when a person has a bias against all cops based off of what they see on TV / social media, it adds a level of difficulty to the job. It can be overcome but it takes a person that wants to do the job. Unfortunately, $35k a year doesn't exactly attract quality applicants with a level head and people skills to not only do the job but act as PR for the entire profession.

Let's see. A person with Medicare intelligence and skills can get a job where
1. They have authority over others.
2. Can be caught lying and still many will trust them.
3. Minimum accountability for negligence or improper behavior. Takes a lot to actually lose your job.
4. You can break minor laws on a regular basis with impunity because of "professional courtesy."
5. Park anywhere you want when you go eat or to the store. Firezones, handicapped, whatever it doesn't matter.
6. Retire after 25 years with good healthcare and nearly full pay for the rest of your life.
Yeah, sounds awful.

Pros: paid vacation while suspended, special legal proceedings unavailable to citizens, paid pension even if convicted of crime while in uniform, minimal sentencing or charges compared to citizens for same crimes, easily acquire same job in different city if fired, inherent legal system bias due to being a cop while automatically given the benefit of a doubt pertaining to any wrongdoings, Can discriminate against applicants, etc etc.
Cons:
Long hours and paperwork
Dealing with anyone who questions orders.

I'm not lumping every cop into that category but I'm saying there is a reason for the bias. Almost everyone I know has a personal experience with a police officer who doesn't do their job properly. As of 2008 the average salary for a police officer was $52k. Are the good ones underpaid? Yes. Are the bad ones overpaid? Most certainly. The point is, I don't feel sorry for police officers having to be held accountable. Yes they have a tough job but they knew what they were getting themselves into.

That's with a lot of overtime and working details. Sure most details are easy but that's time away from their family. Yea I know, they knew what it paid when they applied for the job. Im not arguing if they should be paid more.
