I'd imagine there aren't many public school options in Jackson

I went to school in Lafourche (South Lafourche, not Thibodaux). I enjoyed my schooling. What I enjoyed most was that there weren't any private schools in the area. Nearest private high school was nearly an hour from my parents house. Everyone went to the same school. I went to school with the children of people who were very well off. I went to school with children of people who were very poor. I went to school with people who are very successful. I also went to school with people who dropped out after 9th grade.
Education starts at home. I have always felt parenting determines the child's success.

Dayum!! This is a big factor in why we are homeschooling the newest granddaughter. It would be ridiculous to pay those prices when I have my degree in elementary education and am a former teacher. I taught in public and Catholic schools).
I actually went to boarding school in high school and I checked out their boarding school prices now and was blown away. The average price I saw for the CHEAPER ones was about $30,000 or more per year!

Lol, I know right? My summer camp cost $10k. Nola private school prices are pretty reasonable.

But is public school a valid option up there or do your kids have to be a skilled marksman like in Baton Rouge?
Depends, but most public schools are legit. However, where they are legit you pay school taxes out the arse. Last I heard Westchester county had average property/school tax of $13k+/year. You get what you pay for regardless of where you are.

Little known secret of Jesuit- they have never turned down a student due to family finances. If the kid gets in, he's in regardless of money.

Dude, you live in freaking St. Amant. You are comparing apples to rocket ships with your post. The public school system in a small arse suburb don't compare to BR or Nola. The public school I would have been zoned for sent about 10% of kids to college and is now closed down
First off Dude, I do not reside in St. Amant, nor did I ever do so.
Secondly, my original post at the beginning of the thread pertained to public schools versus private schools in general. I didn't choose to narrow the subject down to these particular metro areas like some posters eventually did.

I would have guessed much more for some of those, it's really cheap when compared to other parts of the country.
I think I pay around 4k in Lafayette for elementary school

Is Christian Brothers still mostly/exclusively for rich and troubled youfs? Always seemed like it had this really cool aura about it when I was growing up.

The fact is that the New Orleans area now has some really good free schools. There was only one before Katrina.
The elementary school(public charter) by my house has a waiting list of over 1,400. The school only holds around 750 students.

My little sister's former school is up at the top of the list, and when someone can't pay, they try their best to get them in a scholarship program like student athlete or band or something. Parents still have to pay something, but it's based on their income. I know two single moms and one mechanic who had their kids there

Congratulation tgrbaitn08, I can tell you are a full-fledged jackass.
My entire argument was not geared towards private institutions specifically located in New Orleans. Sadarade chose to bring up New Orleans public and private education, but that doesn't deter me from sticking with my original argument.
If public schools are particularly bad in these particular areas, then enroll your child in a magnet school. New Orleans has plenty of options and there are boarding schools such as LSMSA which cater to the best and brightest in the state. Plus, you don't have to pay tuition to attend such schools.

By the way, I bet you have a blue collar job too.
Wow, you just took talking out of your arse to a whole new level. Why don't you make a point to know who the frick you are talking to before you mouth off at someone and attack them behind the security of your computer screen.
And even if I did hold a blue collar job, who the frick are you to judge me for such a profession.
If it allows me to provide for my loved ones and offer some economic security, then does it really fricking matter?

Same here. I think for the New Orleans area, it does some cheap.
I am paying a little over $5k for PreK this year at a catholic school in Broussard.

You can't make broad statements like public schools are just as good as private schools. If you live in Baton Rouge, your choice is Baton Rouge High, which doesn't play sports, which i think is a big deal. Not that your kid needs to play sports, but who doesn't want to go to football games on friday nights?
Sending your kid to Tara or Broadmoor isn't much of an option. I seriously doubt they send over 25% of their students to college. Or you could send your kid to Catholic High and pretty much ensure you kid is going to college unless he's borderline retarded.
I understand what your are saying, and i agree that education starts at home. I'm not saying you can't go to public school and be successful. What private schools in south Louisiana offer is a school that is surrounded by staff and students that all aspire to go to college, and anything that detracts from that goal for their students is taken care of swiftly.
